I have a 2004.5 with a Dave Georend built tranny. It works, pulls and shifts awesome. Only problem I have is that from new if you are backing a load up an incline the truck will "hop" or surge like a straight drive that has a warped flywheel. It has done this since new but has gotten more noticable lately. Is this normal for a built tranny, or do I have something going wrong?

My stock tranny does that too when backing up but only if I have a good load in the bed (~1,500lbs - 2,000lbs). I contributed it to the fact the rear end was lower due to the weight in the bed making the U-joints being at different angles, along with the fact I have a two piece drive shaft on my long bed.

It doesn't do it with the camper hooked up which weighs much more but doesn't lower the rear much either when hooked up. Do you have the long bed with the two piece drive shaft too?

Mine does it too. Bugged me at first and i thought something was up but i have never had trouble with the tranny.

mine does this loaded going both directions. I'v found the springs in the clutch disc get "whipped" and are bouncing the hub. I'm on 3rd disc in 300k miles. last 2 didn't last long and it's doing it again. Going to talk to SBC on better spring set up on the hub soon here.

Wheel hop. Traction bars will cure it. I had an instance backing a load up hill in the mud when I first bought the truck. I haven't been in the same spot so the urgency went away.

Already have a set of traction bars. Besides it is not the tires slipping, it is an automatic, but feels like when you are slipping a clutch on a big truck and it starts hopping.

Yes I do have a long bed with the two piece drive shaft. Could possibly be the u-joints in it because I do have over 80k on the stock shafts with 500hp and 37's. I don't notice it backing empty, just if I have a load behind it and am backing up an incline or getting into a tight spot.

I am pulling a load of 10k about 3 days a week so I am noticing it alot lately. I feel like it is more in the converter because it will start doing it when I am giving it gas even before the truck starts to move. I can give it more fuel or less fuel and it will stop, it only does it in a certain rpm range, maybe 14-1500 rpm and it will stop doing it once I get the load rolling.

Found out it is nothing with the tranny. The u-joints and the center carrier bearing getting slop in them are the culprits. Thanks for everyones input.

For those of you who find out this ^^^ is not your problem, check your engine/transmission mounts also.
