whats it take to haul a 12 foot wide boat?
i know over 8 foor and some change i need a wide lad permit or something. but i was thinking about buying my grandpa's old house boat. its more like a boat with a bed and couch. but i think its only 12 foot wide and under 10,000 pounds. id like to haul it around, it would make the perfect catfishing rig. i may have a gooseneck trailer built for it too. maybe.
so what do i need ligaly to drag it around?

My brother purchased a boat from a guy that would bring his boat home for winter storage. I believe it was a 10' beam. He said that every time he transported the boat he would be pulled over and given an **** exam by the state trooper. He would end up with some infraction of some kind. It would be connecting chains to lights. He believed it was because the state wanted to discourage private transportation of oversize loads. I would just assume the same would happen to you and just be prepaired.

like it was said go to the ohio dot and ask them. they are the ones who will give you the ticket if you do it wrong. if you do it the way they say and have proof of what was said it will be easier to discuss anything if you are stopped. they wont care who told you what on what internet site only what their law books says

Out west they haul the oversize boats on special trailers that tip the boat up on one side, thus making it the legal width. They put the boat on the trailer then hydraulic pistons tip up one side of the boat. It looks weird going down the street, but does not require overwidth permits.

That is a common practice for large offshore cats and unlimited hydroplanes and such. But I agree that would not be common place for a fishing boat! Not to mention that those trailers usually require a crane to load and unload the boat. Certainly not typical recreational boat hauling unless maybe you are a bajillionaire.

In order to haul it successfully, you'll need a CTD! We hauled a 35' sportfisher back +-300 mi w/no problems going by state troopers. 12' beam, triple axle trailer, 10k+. We'd ride the right lane stripe so the beam wouldn't cross much over the one-way lane stripe. Once completed w/the new diesels, I'll be hauling in back down that same hwy.
