What weight 5ver can I safely pull

What weight 5ver can I pull safely. I have a 2500 dodge diesel auto, long bed, quad cab with a 410 rearend . I am looking at hitch weight of 2040 and gvwr of 14000 which I don't think I would ever load it to the gvwr. Is this dodge up to this task safely?

You don't say the year of your 3/4T Dodge CTD so i can't be specific. The 2004 3/4T is rated to tow 13,400lbs. with a pin weight of 1,800lbs. My 96 CTD is rated to tow (oops senior moment) just under 11K I think. Your truck will be overloaded witha pin weight of 2,040lbs. The factory ratings include a 150# driver, no passengers or any other load, so you must total your loaded weight then subtract from GVW to obtain the amount available for hitch weight. Bottom line- the 5er is too much for your truck.

A trailer that heavy in GVWR will probaby have a pin weight that puts you over the GVWR of the truck. Problem with a 2500 is most times you will exceed the GVWR of the truck long before you reach the max trailer weight rating. And don't count on not reaching the GVWR of the trailer. With all the options added on and loaded for travel you will be surprised at how heavy that trailer can get. Always weight the rig to be sure.

I think you will find that combo a bit heavy for comforatble towing. My trailer gross is 12k with the truck at 6600 and that is about all I would want on the 3/4. It pulls well but the stopping is at the lower end of acceptable. A one ton dually would make a better tow rig for that trailer.

I agree that 14K is an awful lot of weight for a 2500. Also, your pin weight seems a touch low. 2040 is less than 15% pin weight for a 14K trailer. If that pin weight is a dry weight, then the pin weight will increase when the trailer is loaded.

I know you said you don't ever expect to load it to the GVWR, but if this is an RV, most people start out with less weight and the trailer gets heavier and heavier with time and additional trips. People continue to find more and more things that they would like to bring with them on the next outing.

These guys are right about the weight adding up QUICK.

I have a 30' 5er that has a dry weight of about 7500. Add chow, sodas, water, cloths, beer, rifles, ammo, cleaning gear and the other shoot stuff not to mention the folding chairs, folding table, small gas grill, tool box and other stuff - I'm right at gross of 10000.

If you have a wife, kids, dog, cat or whatever - they will want to take their stuff along. It adds up REAL QUICK.

In regards to the 'too much for a 2500' comments, remember that if he has a '03/'04 HO then he has the exact same hardware as a SRW 3500, minus the overload springs. But that said, 14k fiver is indeed probably playing at the maximum limits for any SRW truck.

Thanks for all the replys. By the way my truck is 2003. I weighed it to day and it weighed 6990 wet and me on board. Just leaving me 2000# to be able to carry. Not much left over for wife and dog or any thing else.

Things sure add up in a hurry, and most estimates are on the low side, at least with me. We have a 36' goose and with just the quads and supplies it's 20,660. And when we load the pre-runner it jumps to 25,300lbs. The truck pulls the load fine, just have to watch further down the road for the other guys.
