What plates to run on a 1 ton?
I'm wondering what you guys w/ 1 tons are running for license plates. I figure that since the truck weighs around 7,000lbs, I should probably go with 'C' plates. In IL, standard 'B' truck plates are only good for 8,000lbs GVW.
I didn't know where else to post this question, so if any mods know of a better spot for it, feel free to move the post.

Depends on your state. In the case of IL, check with Springfield-Sec of State's office or the DMV. http://www.illinois.gov/

I guess I'll have to ask when I get the plates at the license branch, since the sec. of states sight sucks eggs.
I was just wondering if the B plate was rated at empty weight or if the 8,000lb limit was gross weight. It seems that the few duallys I've seen around here had B plates, so I'm guessing they base it on empty weight. It's different with commercial plates... they go by max gross weight.

I plan to put a shell on mine. When I put the Leer on my '99 the DMV gave me RV plates instead of truck plates, and I didn't have to pay the $220 weight fee anymore. I don't know if other states are like that, but I guess it's the one positive CA DMV experience I've ever had.

I'm running passenger plates on mine.
If you put Truck tags on it, some areas will make you abide by the same restrictions (not allowed on parkways, or HOV lanes, etc) as the "Big" trucks.

Why run plates Just drive it like you stole it
No, it depends on your state. Some wil require you run truck plates if you are going to be loading it up. They want their money and your insurance will go up real high

Well if it is a dually and you have an 8000# plate on it you are probably over weight empty. What ever weight the plate is, is the total GVW you are allowed. Your dually is rated at 12,000# so why not put a 12,000# plate on it, that is what I run.
I am pretty sure your laws their in IL are the same as they are here in WI

Luckily here it is not like that, or I would have to have a 36,000# plate. The truck covers itself and the trailer cover itself.
Since your truck has to cover the entire weight I asume the trailer plates are pretty cheap then?

My trailer tag was $34. With the property tax and tag on it was about $125.00. The truck tag and property tax was $764.00.
Here in Kansas when you renew your tags each year you pay for the tag and property tax.
