Weight distribution question ...

Time to ask the experts ...

Getting ready to load up the household goods into the 32', double axle, gooseneck horse trailer. Where should I locate the heavy stuff (furniture and boxes of books) in this trailer ...

over the trailer axles or closer to the gooseneck ??

My thinking is over the trailer axles but I need ya'lls opinions.

Cheers,
PISTOL

I usually load most of the real heavy stuff just forward of the rear axles. This will put some of the wt. On the truck but not so much as to make it ride like a log wagon. Good luck on the move.

By the way I thought a Navy chief new everything, why are you even asking.

I put all my heavy stuff right up against the gooseneck... but my truck is higher than the gooseneck so the trailer is at an angle... If i put heavy stuff by the axles it acts like a lever and the ride is HORRIBLE.

There is a very thin line between knowing it all and being a know-it-all. A good Chief can tap dance on either side of that line

Njoverkill, is your gooseneck riding at an angle by design ? This one rides at an angle as well but I could lower the front if I wanted. I wonder if it makes any difference.

I may just load about 30% of the weight in the front tack room above the gooseneck and the rest back aft. Makes sense to load a little fwd of the trailer axles.

Thanks for the input. Should be a fun trip.

Loading a trailer can become an art, the best way is to put heavy items the length of the load deck area this way most weight will be on the trailer axles
You should know how much weight the trailer puts on your truck rear axle when its empty before loading
I moved my girlfriend to Georgia last year.....so everything had to be put in a 44ft trailer including her car....it turned into a real juggling act not to over load my truck axle....in the end my weight on my truck was OK but the trailer ended up over loaded by 4000 lbs....everything pulled good it was a short trip only 750 miles

What you are looking for in a perfect world is 25% of the weight of the trailer on the hitch. More and it will ride bad and squat, less and it wants to sway more and not track as well.
