Trucking Q's ,Help I'm confused
Please excuse me for beating a half-dead horse. But I know that some of the rules have changed as of July 5.
I have an opportunity to purchase some equipment in FL and haul it to ND and sell it for a profit. Will I need to have a USDOT # and MC #?
If not both which one?
The equipment would be in my name and on my truck using a trailer that is legally borrowed does this make me commercial? I will be at or near 26,000 lbs.
I have spoken to TX DOT three different times and asked the same question to three different people and got three different answers.
I have also looked at the USDOT web site and now am completely confused.
Are there any reputable companies that will do the filling, if I need it? If so could someone tell me about them?

Your truck will need to be licensed to tow the trailer if it's over 10,000 lbs. You must be licensed properly up to 26,000 then you also need CDL. If it's your truck trailer and equipment that is all you need! You should also have a medical card if you gross over 17,000.
Truck is 11,000 gvw
trailer up to 15,000 gvw= 26,000 gcwr
up to 26,000 your truck should have a class 8 registration
this is why it's hard to borrow someone elses gooseneck or 5th wheel trailer

I deal with the DOT here a lot if you are over 26k you need a class A liscense. If your running a dual tandem trailer then they will eyeball you good. It also depends on what your hauling if its farm stuff then most of them will leave you alone if looks commercial then they might stop you. your liscensed here so you go by our plate laws. I know a lot of hay haulers who are not commercial who go out of state to get hay. You can try it and see La. is probably your toughest state to go thru

The load is old military helicopter airframes that will be sold at auction.
No I do not do this as my primary business. This will most likely be a one-time shot.
I do have a class A CDL.
Trailer is only a 3 axle not tandem duel but is 50 ‘ long flat bed.
I have talked to company in Ft. Worth that will turn key the tags and permits but it seems a little steep to me for a onetime thing especially if I can get away without it.
I don’t like the idea that I could be sharing a cell with Bubba if I get stopped and not legal.
Where is H.I.D. when I need him? Maybe I could lease to him or other company and pay a small fee? That way I could be completely legit and both of us make some money.

If involved in any kind of commerce you will be considerd in the group of commercial hauling, now if they are for yard ornaments and you do not go over the wieght limit and you do own the trailer and truck and merchandise you are good to go, that is if you meet your states requirments on wieght, liscense requirments etc. Go have a talk with your local DOT officer, but I suggest not to tell him you are reselling as that automaticly puts you in commerce and are hualing for hire. Florida might not let you in with a 50 footer but otherwise for a 1 time deal the best thing is you are "hauling it for a friend."
Not much they can really do as long as the truck and other stuff is in your name not a company's name.
