Trip to Outer Banks, NC

Planning a week trip to Hatteras and need suggestions. I thought about spraying WD40 on my frame and subparts to help prevent salt corrosion.....thoughts? Do I need to even worry about a one time trip? Maybe just clean it good when I return home. Comments appreciated.

I wouldn't bother with any preventive measure. Just wash it real good once you're back. This would apply to running on the beach or sticking with the roads. Make sure you flush out any crevice or cavity underneath.

I'd even wash it as soon as you get off the OBX. There is a decent car wash on 168 in Currituck county on the right side (heading N) maybe 7 miles or so after the bridge. If you're heading E on 64 then I think the nearest one that has easy access is in Plymouth. that's about 60 miles after you cross Manteo. It's on the right, right after the gas house.

If you want to see what damage is done by the salt air stop by Outer Banks Dodge/Jeep and take a peek under those new vehicles

WD40 will evaporate in a few minutes and do you no good at all.

Have fun on the beach!!! I used to live at MP 3 in Kitty Hawk and REALLY miss it :'( I used to be able to see the ocean from my couch :-[

Thank you both for the feedback. It will be my first trip to the area and I'm looking forward to it. As suggested, I'll clean it good after I leave the beach area.

Just got back from there over the weekend. Like everyone says wash it good as soon as you can. Get underneath real good. I had sand just slam packed in the front rims. I assume you have a duelly. They are not really made for driving in sand. I had a 99 3500 4x4 and it didn't like the sand like my 03 srw. Watch the tide charts and slack your tires down to 25 lbs. Be carefull with the rear tires as to not let the sidewalls touch. Take a yank strap. Try to keep your momentum up in the soft stuff and use 4 high unless you get stuck. You'll need a beast of a truck you get you out. Have fun! ;D

Gary,
It's not that bad if you stay off the beach. There are many rusted out 4x4's down that way.
As far as things to do besides the beach, not a whole lot. The light houses are neat. Some of the best surf casting on the east coast. They also have great off shore fishing if you want to charter a boat out of Oregon Inlet.
We stay in Waves, at either the KOA, Camp Hatteras or Ocean Waves. All are nice.

Re:Trip to Outer Banks, NC

Sorry I am going to have to disagree with you dmack. just stop by the local jeep/dodge/chrysler dealer(2 blocks from the oceanfront) on the "main drag" and take a peek under all the new rusty autos. I had a 74 VW Westy camper that was up in chesapeake for years and years, super clean body. Just over a year on the OBX and I had rust holes. lack of grass and constant wind and it sand blasts everything.

Gary-KJ6Q- Yes it is worth it, go on down to the southern OBX(for camping) and have a great time. you can do most any water sport imaginable. The beaches are so beautiful and natural, no boardwalks, no 20 story ocean front hotels. the ferrys are cool. the fall is a great time to go, not so hot and the summer rush is over. If you golf, take your clubs there are at least 6 courses with in a half hour of Kitty Hawk. Go to Sea Scape beautiful course(my home is on the 2nd fairway) This year is the first flight centenial and there is lots going on.

Re:Trip to Outer Banks, NC

There used to be a good car wash there in Manteo....and some good campgrounds around Buxton and all the way down to Ocracoke...the fishing will be best in October. But do wash trailer and truck when you leave.....cya
