Tranny temps
I just got some gages fitted on my truck. I now can`see what temps I have been running. They are starting to scare the heck out of me. My temp gage is installed at the tranny, in the line to the first cooler. I find I am running around 160-190F on the road and upwards of 210F in the hills and in town. I am towing a 8000-9000# trailer.
Recognizing that I have the 4 speed auto, which I have been led to believe runs hot, what temps do others see out there with similar equipment when towing heavy?

Hi John. That is about what I run for temps. If you get over 210, get out of the throttle a little, drop out of O?D and it will come right back down, even in the hills. Its all I've done, along with an oil and filter change annually, and I've got over 230,000 miles on mine. Quite honestly most tranny temp guages are reading from the pan so their readouts are 25 - 30 degrees cooler, but not quite as telling. Having said that, the temp parameters mentioned in most places asume the sensor is in the pan. Rick

Thanks, I also just found the thread in the other forum, on "Performance Accessories - 1st & 2nd Gen" that agrees with your response. That eases my mind a whole lot. From the other thread, it sounds like I'm OK up to about 250F, but if I see 270F, I have to back off some.
I had been advised by someone else, that I should try to keep the numbers below 190F, so I was having a hard time with the 210F+ numbers I was experiencing.
I was having a particular hard time understanding that advice since the first cooler uses engine coolant, which has got to be in excess of 220F, so if I have no air coming through the grill, as in city traffic, then I probably wouldn't be able to get below that value no matter what I tried.
