Thumbs up Tranny cooling 101

I wired up my tranny cooler fan last weekend, I put an auxillary cooler under the bed with a fan on top. With just the cooler while snowplowing I saw an average temp of 240* while doing drives and 220* doing longer pushes. With the fan on I never see over 180, and this is beating the tar out of the truck trying to get drives done as quick as possible. I used an S blade type out of an older car, I know that flex-a-lite sells a cooler and fan combo pack, anybody that plows or sees higher tranny temps it's worth it!

I added one of the flex-a-lite coolers to mine, but I noticed at highway speeds the fan doesn't make any difference. Seems to only help at low speeds like 20 mph or less.

One thing I did read on Geno's Web Page on the TSB section, is that some 1st gen trucks had a by-pass fitted to the small radiator at the front, something to do with not icing up in real cold weather. Dodge recommends taking that out if you plough or towing heavy. I know mine has the bypass, so I'm going to take it off 1st chance I get.

OK I am currious, where are you pulling your Tranny temp from? I know on the 03's if you use the same lead the computer is using then I never see above 160
maybe I should install an actuall probe???

Mine is in the hot line just after it comes out of the tranny on its way to the coolers. Since the auxillary is under the bed it doesn't cool at highway speed, but I've never had a problem with highway speed temps. It's only when plowing and this is the solution!

Matt, the hot line seems like the best place for the ATF temperature sensor. I am planning to do the same thing. How did you plumb the sensor into the line? Did you find a kit somewhere? Did you have to cut the line? Any pictures? Thanks for letting us know!
