Trailer/ truck question for friend.

Have a friend who is in the marked for a new used gasser truck to tow a 2 horse aluminum trailer weighing 2200 or so. Personally I would have nothing but a 3/4 or 1 ton rig myself but she is considering a 1/2 ton due to cost and fuel economy. diesel is out of the question for her and she`s even considered a toyota tundra? 1/2 ton 2wd.
What are your thoughts on a 1/2 ton a towing with 2 horses, be honest and open minded please, im gonna let her rear these posts.
Thanks a bunch.

I towed with a half ton for several years, and it would probably get her by just fine for two horses. I think I would go with something heavier than a Toyota. My opinion is, the longer and heavier the tow vehicle, the better for stability.

Toyota Tundra with a v8 will tow as well as any other 1/2 ton. I towed a 5k 5th wheel and a 3k cargo trailer with mine. No problems except in the rockies(colorado area) I had to run in 2nd on the steep climbs. I towed the cargo trailer with a suburban with a 350 and I think the tundra did a better job. Anything under 5k should not be a problem, tow rating is about 7200, but I wouldn't do that with any 1/2 ton.

The Toyota should handle it with no problem. Might have to use the transmission some.

Is she dead set on a new unit? The most economical would be to find an 92-96 Ford 150 or 250 with the 300 I6 in it. I had one and pulled dads old travel trailer fully loaded at 8000lbs for a couple years. When I dumped it I had 480K on it and it was just about ready to be rebuilt. I had a new head on the shelf ready to go, but decided to off it.

If it has to be a new one I wouldn't worry too much about the Yota. I smoked one just yesterday.

She'll be fine with a half ton hauling those two ponies. I agree with smokindog, those straight sixes were great gassers. Gotta wonder why ford ever did away with them? Then agin they still haven' t figured out the best configuration for diesels either
