Towing weights

The last load I pulled felt quite heavy so I weighed it before hitting the Kentucky scales. I was 100 pounds less than 32,000 pounds gross. The drive axle was over 8800 pounds. That is about a 6000 pound hitch weight. This is on stock 2500 springs and axle with dual adaptors. Handled good with a slight back slap. Well within the capacity of the springs. Still passed trucks all the way to Louisville. Reason that I was surprised, I had two suburban type vehicles and a high top van. Reason was that the two trucks were 3/4 ton with fwd. Had $160.000 in custom trucks on the trailer. I really don't think that you can overload the darn truck. With a load like this I am legal on the scales but not for a DOT check due to the truck gross weight being exceeded. The GVW is only 8800 pounds and I had that on the one axle.

HID, that's impressive, and nice to know these trucks can handle that kind of work on a daily basis. Your Gross is double what I pull when the boat is hooked up.

I'm curious, with that 5 spd and those highway gears you're running, what gear do you normally run on the flat and level? OD or Direct?

For the rest of the gears I shift up at 1800.

Re:Towing weights

HID, just a thought but when most people see duel wheels they think 1 ton .Do you think that could be the reason DOT has not bothered you? Also how much do you think the fine for that would run, would the load have paid it and still left anything?

Just curious as I have been out of the business for a long time. When I was pulling a rock bucket, most of the time the overload would pay the fine(when caught) and the load made the profit.
Re:Towing weights

A friend of mine pulled four JD's home from Tennessee and weighed in at just over 32000 with his 2000 3500. The most I have pulled is 26000 and the truck does just fine. Got plenty of brakes even at that load.
Unfortunately, I did not order the dual tandems on my GN so I don't like to pull that in the summer when the tires get hot. Wish I could switch the axles over to the duals now or put a third axle under it.

Re:Towing weights

BigFoot I really don't know, see I am legal on the plated weight, on tire weight, on the percieved axel weight and really just as safe as a 3500. On a couple of DOT inspections the cop has looked at the door jamb, said "Hmmmmmm" and went on using the numbers on the paperwork, so I have no experience on that. I suppose that they could shut it down and make me split the load, but have not run into that yet.
