Towing from Chicago to Alamagordo, NM : Any route recommendations ?
Hi guys,
Going to be driving out to Alamagordo, NM from Chicago, IL and will be pulling a car on a trailer back to Chicago . . . any tips or recommendations on routes to take or avoid ? Any "must see" area's to briefly stop and ohh/ahh over ?
Thanks in advance.

you can take 55 south to st louis --70 west to 44 and 44 to 40. personally i like to take 55 straight down to 40 and 40 to new mexico.
that way i can stop in Sikeston (at 55 and 57) , and eat at Lambert's Cafe and spend the nite on Beale street in Memphis and eat ribs

Right on Herb. Lamberts is great. Hey 38, just south of Amarillo is Palo Duro canyon. The Grand Canyou of Texas. It's really nice. Just west of Amarillo is the "Cadillac Ranch" . It's a bunch of old 50's Caddy's buried nose first in the ground. Drive safe.

Sorry 38, almost forgot one for you. "The Big Texan" on the east side of Amarillo. They serve a 72oz steak. If you eat it and all the trimmings in under an hour it's free. The signs for it start in Missouri, or at least they used to!!!!

Stay off of 82 Hwy through Cloudcroft. I dropped a valve there once pulling my 5er. Not on my Cummins tho it was a Chevy. It's a high twisty road as I remember and the hills killed the Chevy 350. I repl. it with a 400 which was much better.

44 down to OKC then 40 to Amarillo. South on Loop 335 to I27 to Canyon then US 60 to Clovis, NM. Then US 70 takes you all the way in to Alamo. Stop at Ruidoso Downs and leave a little green to help our economy, the ponies run Wednesday through Sunday. No hard pulls on any of it and about all of it is 4 lanes.
There is a little construction on 70 between Roswell (breakfast at the UFO cafe is good) and Hondo.
Would not go on out on I40 to Santa Rosa and take US 54 down. It is rougher than a cob from Vaughn to Corona from all the truck traffic.

If you decide to take 44 out of St. Louis, there is another Lamberts, just south of Springfield on Hwy. 65. Probably about 12 miles south of 44 in Ozark, MO. I've been known to dine there a time or two, or 12 or 13.
Later.

been there too, one of Norms son's operates that one also has a son who operates one in Foley Alabama.
They recentley (in the past year i guess) relocated in Sikeston. They lost the lease on the bldg they were in and built another about twice the size just a few blocks north of where they were. Actually, i think the location they are at now is the original property that the first Lamberts was located at.
We started going to Lambert's at the original location a year or so before they made their first move.
I built Norm a carriage in memory of his son Todd who was killed in a car accident in 1985 i beleive and went on to build him several more thru the years. he had quite a collection of Mamoth mules .
