Too much weight?

I live in Alaska and want to go to cali and pick up a 40x60 shop that weighs 19,000 lbs. The trailer I believe weighs 6000lbs. Will 25,000lbs of trailer be too much for the truck? I also read that you need to have a class A license for trucks over a certain weight limit. Is this true? Would you have to go through the same process as truck drivers?

Re:Too much weight?

You will be way overweight. I tow a 5th wheeler that weighs approx. 11,500 and my gross weight is about 800-900 lbs over the recomended weight for the combo.

Re:Too much weight?

I pull around 22,000# combined trailer and load behind my dually, the trailer is a tandem dually also. The GCVW is 30,000# on the set-up. It pulls well but you can tell you have alot of weight their. I would NOT do it with a 3/4 ton though, that is just too much for a single wheel truck in my opinion.

Just to give you an idea the truck weighed in at 11,860# which would be over what your 3/4 ton is rated for, and their was 7,140# on the rear axle, which is over weight for a single tire axle also.

And yes you do have to have a CDL because your GCVW is over 26,000#

Re:Too much weight?

As far as the truck goes, I have had 3800 lbs of wood on the back every time I cut wood. I happen to live by a scale and it read 11,600lbs combined for just the truck. I came back and weighed it again and she weighed 7800 with me and the saw and stough left. My point is I think the truck can handle it as far as weight on the back springs. My tires are rated for 3500 lbs a piece. As far as the trailer goes, the trailer is rated for 20k. I think the weight is 18.5k of the building. The trailer weighs 6k. I will be 4.5k over weight. I just wonder if the trailer can take it?

Re:Too much weight?

But what is your truck rated and licensed for, only have a license for 8000# I would bet. That is where you will get in trouble. Truck is licensed at 8000, and trailer at 20,000 that is a GCVW of 28,000 and you will be running at 32,800. So you are running at 4,800 over you registered weight plus you don't have the CDL to pull it. I would guess your truck has a GCVW of 18,000 or so, so you are running 14,800 over that. If you get stopped I can tell you that you wont be going any where for a long time. Its not so much a mater of can it pull it as much of how big a chance are you willing to take at getting stoped or if you run someone down, even if it isn't your fault and you are that far over weight watch out.

Then you have 19,000 that you are going to put on a 6,000 trailer. That is a total of 25,000 and it is rated for 20,000. So you need to put atleast 5,000 tungue weight on the truck to keep the trailer axles leagal. The truck weighs 7,800 + the 5,000 of tungue weight is 12,800 total, that is more then my dually is rated for. And that would have to put your 3,500 tires over their limit also.

I don't run totaly legal either to the letter of the law. But the only thing I am over is the 23,000 gcvw rating of the truck. The truck weight and all axle weights are below legal and I have the class A CDL to pull it. My truck is registered at 12,000 and weighs 11,860 when pulling. The trailer is registed at 26,000 and is 18,120 on the axles - it is rated for 24,000 but you can't get a 24,000 plate, go figure....

Re:Too much weight?

Kinda off topic, but does anybody know of a web site with all the specifications on what liscense you need to pull what, or what registration you need to pull what? I know it varies from state to state, but it seems like everyone says something diffent when it comes to laws are regulations

Re:Too much weight?

Although they are issued by the individual states, I think you will find that the CDL requirements will be the same. You should be able to find the answer to your question(s) at your local (State) Highway Patrol or DOT office.

Re:Too much weight?

Basically if it is over 26,000# and is a single vehicle staight truck (no trailer) you need a Class "B"

If it is over 26,000# gcvw and has a trailer, regardless of what the trailer weight is, you need a Class "A"
