Bone stock w/no engine mods and I'm getting 11-12 pulling 7K TT @ 60-65MPH. This is mostly in S Texas though w no real hills or anything. Unloaded w/ no trailer or anything we're barley gettin' 18. I was told by everybody I know I can expect this to get better as it gets worn in. I was thinking about it the other day though, 15 years ago gas was half of what it is now but I had a Chevy 3/4ton w/454 and was only getting about 6 MPG pulling anything. It all works out that it still costs me about the same to haul the same distance.

I haul heavy equipment, around here its mostly hills and mountains, the best ive seen with any load on is 10mpg, I usually get between 7-9mpg. Like I said though, im pulling a 4500lb (empty weight) gooseneck trailer with anywhere from 6000-10,000 lbs worth of equipment loaded. Not much of a suprise im only getting 7-9 mpg.

Empty going 70-75 I get 17-18.5mpg with an Auto. Now Towing a trailer, 6-8,000lbs trailer I get from 13.5-15 and then pulling the same trailer ( 4,000lb) plus a 13,000lb forklift I get around almost 12mpg. This is traveling at 55-65 depending on traffic and road conditions.

I think the problem with poor mileage is #1 TOo much speed, if your towing why the heck are you going more then 65mph, I hear ppl saying 70-75mph. The faster you go the worse off you are in mileage. Semi trucks use half the fuel to pull the load and half to cut the wind. Thats 1/2 the Fuel to just push the air out of the way, so why would you want to go fast pulling a camper or tall load.
#2, Truck not broken in, I noticed a big improvement in mileage after about 30,000 miles. Mileage empty improved 4-5mpg and towing improved 2-3.

i don't even look at my mileage anymore , doesn't matter how i drive, mods anything , i have just come to the conclusion thats poor mileage is the cost for havin toys!! i also believe that if you can afford the toys , the fuel costs shouldn't be an issue. my srt gets 8mpg granny footin it!! no load, no passengers, no nothing!! goes to 6mpg when i'm havin fun with it,and i don't even look what my 3500 and 38"eagle get on the road.

The gap between the back of the cab and the front of the trailer on a tag-along makes them harder to pull than a larger 5er.

Mpg

My '05 with 6k on the clock averaged 16.2 with a 16' bumper pull and a tractor on board (7k total) at 3-5 mph over the posted limit on a round trip from W. Colo. to Tacoma, Wa. I get about 17 -19 empty on local driving which always includes punching it at least every once in awhile . Now that it's got some miles on it I get 20+ on the open road.
