i went with this system and thus far it is working well.

It is a 2.5 gallon tank and I have it and the compressor mounted on the passenger side on the ourside of the frame rail. Plenty of room and able to be mounted properly.

I have seen many clever air-tanks, over the years.
Rollbars, pipe or tube bumpers, tube frames, tube cross-members, any hollow steel that can be plugged air-tight and have an air fitting threaded in.
I have even seen fake stacks that were air-tanks.
A few days ago, I saw a very long square-tube framed trailer, that the entire frame, both sides, was one big air-tank.
One back wheel had a front spindle/hub from a Dana 60 4x4, that drove a cam operated pitman-arm, that, in turn, drove the fly-wheel of a good-sized compressor, complete with a pop-off valve.
When he wanted to build air, he locked the hub.
When he had the frame/air-tank full, he un-locked the hub.
The only draw-back to his system was the tire had to roll to work the compressor.
