FWIW Cuesta Grade is an additional 15 miles north of Pismo Beach. The south side is fairly steep, several miles long and years ago it was not uncommon for trucks to run away. Now with better equipment (and maybe more care on the drivers part) it is very rare.

I hate laughlin too. I pulled out of there in July at about 28k lbs. It wouldnt be so bad, except that you have to come a complete stop at the bottom. 120 degree temps really test your rig.......and make the rest of trip easy.
There were numerous people pulled over for tires or heat, I just chugged along.

#5 - Teton Pass in Wyoming west of Jackson. Either direction is a nerve test for sure.
Rte 22 is only 10% for three miles.

I don't suppose anyone mentioned the hills in Seattle which are 55 degrees - for two blocks coming up from Pike St. Market?

We love the trailer, we put living quarters in it to offset the costs of lodging on the road.
May be selling it tho. The Cdl thing is just more trouble than it is worth for us. Just bought a slide in camper and a 30" closed tag along. sacrificing 9' of deck space doing it this way.

i know no one in this category has air brakes . my 45 years of class 8 trucks
prior to ingine brakes jakes or exhaust brakes . a rule of thumb was if you are applying more than 10 # of application pressure you are in the wrong gear.
brakes adjusted must be up to snuff. with good brakes and 10# psi
steady application will not smoke brakes.

...funny you mention Big Bear. I've never been there but just did brakes last week on an 01 2wd all the way around. The guy said "it just hasn't felt right since they came down from Big Bear". Front rotors done, all the caliper boots were burned off, pads were melted. Asked him what his trailer weight was.....he had no idea other than it was a 30ft RV with a slide.

i've been reading this thread and

WV has more than it's share of steeeeeep grades, although shorter than most of these ....

but 55 degrees ...whew boy ... like to see a picture of that

put a lockup switch in my truck because i was hauling 20k+ lbs of lumber into webster springs, WV with my '01 auto ...

got to the bottom but with smoking trailer brakes ... only time in my life ... and no more second gear ... DTT guy looked at me and said "what the hell did you do to second?"

old trucker with me smiled and said "ahhh their just broken in now"

Are you sure about that? 55* is way steeper than a 1:1 slope. If you get sideways on that kind of slope you will roll.

I was thinking the same thing. Most people cant even walk up a 55* angle.

yea i went to sbcc for a few years, and we use to dirtbike up at the top of that mountain right behind santa barbara, and no matter which roads u take its a climb for sure. Even the highway 101 north of santa barbara that brings u up from the ocean is pretty steep and long.

I pulled through Monarch pass this summer on vacation. We were pulling our pop-up (light I know) with our 7.3 excursion. It wouldn't be that bad for an experienced puller, but keep in mind this was my first pass ever! I learned alot though.
