Is this a safe tow configuration??

2004 Nissan Titan SE CC, 5.6, 4x4, Tow Package, Equal-i-zer WD, Prodigy BC
2007 Jayco JayFlight 29BHS

The Titan weighs 5199#. (per Nissan web site)
The Jayco weighs 5425# dry, max. 7500# loaded. (per Jayco web site)

Nissan states the Titan tow rating is 9400#.

Read a thread where the Titan owner advised folks to stay in 4th unless there was a hill, then down-shift to 3rd or 2nd.

I AM NOT TRYING TO START A WAR ABOUT TITANS VS RAMS, just interested in learning more about vehicle, trailer, tow weights. This configuration seems to me to be more than a Titan should handle.

Opinions?

The Titan could handle it, with a driver that knew what he was doing. I would not call it ideal, nor would I want to do it regularly

grant......................

they got a thread on this same subject closed about 2 weeks ago.

i wouldnt do it. i prefer to have a much heavier tow vehicle, helps to keep the whipsawing action of the trailer down to a minimum

I'm not saying I would. I know people that have TT that they tow once or twice a year, only a hundered miles or so each way. It could work fine for someone that, depending on terrain and driver. Every situitaion is different.

But the consensus will be no. And it will go downhill like the last time it was brought up.

I say its fine.

Before I bought my Megacab I had a crew cab Titan. With that Titan I pulled an 8000lb travel trailer many times. With 8000+ lbs in tow I never had power problems, and only in high winds (SoCal Santa Ana winds regularly exceed 50 mph) did I ever have "white knuckles".

The engine/tranny combo in the Titan is awesome. Its a 5-speed tranny with a semi-granny 1st gear, manual mode, tow/haul mode, and its pretty darn stout. The engine makes a ton of power (Nissan has it underrated at 305 h.p. - either that or everyone else overrates their engines because it dynos the same as the 345 h.p. HEMI) and the majority of the torque comes on under 2000 rpm (its like a gasser version of the Cummins ). When towing I cruised at about 60 mph in direct (4th gear is 1:1) at about 2200 rpm.

The biggest problem with the Titan is its soft 1/2-ton suspension. But a $250 set of airbags can really help there. Or, you can install a set of Timbrens like I did. If I needed another 1/2-ton truck the Titan would be tops on my list.

Pauly's rite on with this one. I also towed a very close to 8000lb toyhauler with my 04' Titan and never had a problem, plenty of power.
I just knew it was time to move up to a larger rig for a future 5th wheel.
I say it's fine as long as the guy doesn't go crazy flying down the highway at Mach 10.

Yes, a friend of mine tows about the same load with his Titan. He says he wouldn't want to tow any more than that, but it seems to handle the load. He just couldn't keep up with me going over Snoqualmie Pass.

I've hauled more with a 69f100,and that is underbuilt as heck.
Just gotta be carefull and think ahead (good idea even with the diesel)
Don't see why the Titan would handel it worse...

I would do it as well. A couple times a year no big deal. U got a good set up, whats the tow rating of your hitch and ball, 10/12 on the hitch?
The prodigy is an awesome controller if its set right, and thats a no-brainer. Dont forget the GCWR is what u need to look at not the GVWR
My 93 dually is only GVWR'd at 10100, and I weight out at 10500 with my EMPTY 24FT BP flatbed, (go figure). The GVWR is what YOUR (the tow rig's) brakes can handle alone.
