I can tell you from my experience that my 2500 has more traction and can out pull my 3500 when they are both in 2WD........once my 3500 leaves the pavement, it is useless in 2WD.......it is a bear in 4WD, though...

Guys - he said he's going to have a slide in camper on the truck. That's probably a few thousand pounds right there that'll help a lot.

Does the 4x2 dually have limited slip in rear?

Good point, that particular slide-in could easily be over 4000 lbs fully loaded.......that would help a lot with traction.

I'm not sure if there is a limited slip option on a 2WD......I'm sure someone here will chime in with the answer on that.

The boat ramps here in sunny Oklahoma get slick some times becuase the alge likes to grow on them. I think my dually is pretty studly, but I have had to put it in 4wd a few times to get moving up the ramp with my buddy's boat. Get 4wd. My two cents.

This is a sort of situation where if you have 4x4 you wonder how you ever lived without it. 4x4 makes an enourmous difference in any off road situation. The 2x4 guys think, ahhh heck, my truck can do it I have always doen it like that...... Once you have 4x4 u won't go back.

IMO If you only have rear wheels working to get the boat out and you start to spin you are now out of options, unless someone can pull you out. I worked at a towing company for many years and pulled more than one 2wd tow vehicle with trailer out of the drink. IMO a person does not buy 4WD because they use it every day, it's mostly a one time $1500.00 insurance plan thats always there when you need it. It affects resale too, so you get some of that back when and if you sell. Just my .02

yeah but...

What happens if when he backs that truck down there to get the boat, or drop it off, that the slide in goes, 'ker plunk' into the drink? Will his traction be OK then? See ... you've got to cover all the possibilities!

Personally, I'd rather back my truck and not have to even CONSIDER traction. No doubt my trucks coming back up the ramp being its 4WD. I'll even sneak it into 4LO (when nobody's lookin' hehehe) and make it look real easy.

Some guys like to watch NASCAR for fun, I'd rather sit at a boat launch all day and watch the antics of some. Now that's entertainment!

possibilities...

I've been thinking about taking a video camera to a boat launch. I'm just a bit worried that some yocal might come at me with a tire iron, after he get's ****** off at his wife even when its his fault for not putting the plug in the boat before it let off the trailer (much less before its put in the water). Ahh the sheer entertainment.

Then I could go home and edit out the fellers who've done it enough to have it down to a science. The end result would have me in tears for hours, over and over again.

I'm not sure its worth the risk though.

Well, you could put a ball on the front of your truck. I've seen this done also so the driver can manuever the trailer more easily.

hmmm..... I think you'd have less traction in reverse, and uhhh, front end could be like submerged dependig on the launch, I've seen some trucks in water with rear wheels fully submerged and the exhaust gurgling away, I know our old 454 GM sounded pretty cool like that.

To me, it's all about selecting the proper tool for the job.

If I was going to be launching a boat I'd opt for the 4X4.

Why be an addition to someone else's "Ya gotta see this" gallery, or a "I had to pull out a Dodge Diesel with my Ford" thread?
