New trailer - need advice

I haul 2 cars with a 4,500 lb. trailer and run around 20,000. add 3,000 more for your bigger trailer and the 3500 for the Crown Vic. Your over 26,000. This will throw a red flag and you will be the one who gets stopped and checked.
If your truck gvw is 12,000 and your trailer gvw is 15,000 you will be fined even if you are empty. They go by the numbers on your registration.

If my truck is 8500, trailer is 7500 then that leaves 10k for cars
three cars could weigh <10k easily. A Crown Vic is only about 3500 or so.

Rick I know what you mean on this. I am trying to do the right thing on the other hand I just got off the phone with another Enforcement officer that said that what I am doing would require a CDL no matter what. I was told something exactly opposite by someone in his oiffice earlier today. So that just goes to show that these folks cant even decide within their own office what the regs are. I think to start off I will do everything I can to keep it under 26K and work on getting a CDL eventually if I need it. But this guy was talking DOT number, annual inspections, ICC number, registering the truck in EVERY state I tranport in, etc, etc. I mean, good God do these guys think used cars are made of gold? I'm sure the insurance would be at least a $500 or so a month, am I close?

I went thru the same thing a couple years ago. Everyone had a differant answer. If you are over 26000 you need a CDL. Once you get CDL all the other:
DOT number, annual inspections, ICC number, registering the truck in EVERY state I tranport in, etc...
I'm not made of gold either, just keep it under 26,000 and your good to go in any state. If you ever get stopped the cars are all yours even if they aren't.

Is your truck auto or stick? Mine's auto DTT and it pulls great on the highway, but get on some hilly, twisty backroads and 2 cars give me hard time, couldn't imagine trying to pull 3 on some of the roads I travel.

I have to agree that staying under 26K is the way to go. Here is another problem, one officer I just spoke to said that even if the cars are all mine it doesn't matter since I intend to sell them to make money I am still conducting comerce and would require a CDL even if I was under 26K!!! This is starting to make my head hurt. Based on that statement anyone with a pick up truck and a dolly that goes to an auction to buy a car to fix up and make a few extra bucks will have to have a CDL!? Right?

Like I said I just went thru all this and as long as you stay under 26000 you will be fine. Only need CDL for over 26000.
You are still going to have a problem with your trailer weight. Your truck and trailer will be registered for 27,000. You will need a CDL and all the other stuff.
It doesn't matter if your empty or only 1 or 2 cars your registration must be under 26,000.

I have called Take 3 and they are willing to adjust the tag for the trailer. So I can adjust fire on the total amount. I don't think I can do that on the truck but if I get it 26K with the truck and trailer and I am under weight and have the truck registered properly I should be good.
