Drove to San Diego 2 weeks ago. Pulling 9,500 lb keystone laredo 5th wheel. Total gross weight truck and trailer 16,500 lbs. Empty freeway 22 mpg, towing to San Diego and back averaged 12 mpg.

I have an older Bonair 5'r which weighs around 5k empty and I figure that with all of the stuff we bring to the farm weighs around 7 loaded. I can get 30 mpg empty at modest speeds 60mph or so. Pulling I can get 22 but usually get just under 20 unless there is a nasty crosswind or excess heat. (no intercooler) On a cool day, heading east through Montana with a brisk tailwind I got nearly 25 but I practically was blown east and barely touched the foot feed. Heat and wind can bring it down to 17 mpg on a real bad day. (your gallons are 3.8 litres and ours are 4.5 litres ) Oh yeah my speedo under-reports a bit so real mpg might be a little better.

Locally, guys who bought new dodges were shocked at the poor mileage they got compared to their 02's and so on.

I just got back from vacation pulling a 30' Aljo that weighs about 10,000 and has a front living room with a high profile. We did some of the highest passes in SW Colorado, Wolf Creek, Molas, Monarch, and the Million dollar highway from Silverton to Montrose. Got 10 mpg while towing. Truck has 13,000 miles on it. I get 15-16 unloaded. My father-in-laws 96 gets 21-23 wish mine would do that.

Speed is the biggest killer of mileage, especialy with a high fiver. 55-60 mph is the sweet spot for many. At 55 with the 4.10's, I am turning 1700-1800 rpms. The truck is broken in, 33k. Even towing the 14k Alfa, we can get 13 mpg at 55. If you absolutely do not need to make time, slow down. It will be money in your pocket.
Airing up your tires to max on the truck and trailer also cuts down on rolling resistance.
I think as you get over 2000rpm, turbo kicks in and mileage starts dropping.
I have been towing our 18' flat bed out to West Texas fairly often, with verying loads & hights. Normally run 65-70, get about 15 overall.
At 55 mph, empty, I can get 20mpg. Not bad for 4.10's and a 7k truck.
