Mileage pulling 5er

Very nice choice, I wish they would have had that model when I bought mine. I really like the layout. Are you getting the one with the bath in the queen room?

There is quite a bit of difference when you look at the profile of hauling a 5er versus any other load. To make the point, my wifes '03 usually gets about the same mileage (unloaded) as my truck. We were coming back from a show in Duncan, OK a few weeks ago. I was hauling our 5th wheel camper (Mallard 235M) and she was pulling our 24' Hart Custom cattle hauler with a full load of Longhorns. We even had our big riding steers in there. Her load was almost double the weight of mine, yet she averaged 14 mpg, while I was barely making 11! Since my aux tank was empty, I was starting to sweat running out of fuel before we hit a truck stop in Alvord.
The "sail effect" of the stand up front end of the lightweight fifth wheel does make a considerable difference.

Mileage
I pull a 27' 5er with two atv's behind it in Nevada and Southern Utah (alway's seem to be going uphill) and have been getting 9 to 11 mpg. The truck has just over 3,500 mile on it and I am pretty happy with that mileage so far. And it sure is fun!

Man! Something must be wrong with my truck. I tow my '07 Outback Sydney 33' foot fifth wheel at 70-72 mph and am lucky to get 9mpg. The truck just turned 14k and that is here in FL on a recent round trip to the Keys from St Augustine. My fiver has a more rounded front than most, too, and weighs 8100lbs empty. No performance mods except for the FS-2500 by pass filter and Mag-Hytec rear dif cover . I'm wondering if a Banks ram air intake and exhaust will help at all.

PCM:
I'd say the 70+ MPH is what is killing your MPG.
What axle ratio do you have?
That rig looks really good behind your truck, it is a 4WD isn't it.
What hitch are you using? Did you have to flip your trailer axles to get it that level?

Just got 11.1 pulling 17,500 pound fiver from South Carolina to Detroit. On the way down to South Carolina I got 10.35 (hand calculated over four refuelings) bucking headwinds all the way. The computer showed average of 10.3 over that distance.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm pleased with the way the rig leveled out. No suspension mods to either truck or trailer. Axle is a 3.73 and yes, it's a 4wd. I did have the rv dealer adjust the king pin UP 2 holes. The fiver hitch is in next to the lowest hole. I use the Reese 16k 4 point pivot head hitch with the Kwik Slide round tube slider. It's great for backing and hitching up on uneven ground. Just had a front mount receiver installed for a 2 bike carrier. Will post a pic soon. pcm

I got 10-11 mpg running up and back to S. Dakota this last week pulling a 34 foot 5er and bikes behind it. Complete package around 22,000 lbs. Probably could have gotten better if I'd pulled closer to 60 than 70. Coming back down I-90 when I slowed to 62 mph the overhead console showed a 2 mpg increase. Go figure.

Pulling anything from 29'-38' FW
I get about 10-12mpg too, with URWD (ultra right wing diesel) that I buy up here in north Idaho/montana...some rigs just get better milage than others, could have something to do with a "Loud pedal" addiction

I still get about 12 mpg with the 7,500# 28' fiver sticking up in the air.
Worst ever was 8 mpg bucking a 45 mph head-wind across SD, ND, and into Miles City, Montana.

My Experience.....
(COPIED AND PASTED FROM ANOTHER POST)
A year ago I had a 31ft travel trailer (puller), my 2004 TDC got 12.5-13.5mpg pulling the highway speed limit (65-70mph)easily. This year, I have a 2007 Hemi QC...(don't ask...its a LONG painful story!!) I have a 19ft travel trailer.....and I am lucky if I get 7mpg doing an average of 57mph. If I would like to go any faster I have to endure constant downshifting to atain 38-45k RPM for the power. What a joke! My truck has 2400 miles on it and it's going to be traded in even if i have to be upside down on the 2007 TDC. I will save at least as much in fuel!! My wife is also very disappointed...and so it makes it even easier to trade off, no wife factor!
My 2 cents!

I just got back from a 1000 mi trip to Bridgeport, CA. in the eastern Sierra Mountains with 4 long grades to go up and come down. Pulled a 5ver with a boat full of firewood behind it. Total weight about 9000 lb. MPG was 11.1 going up and 12.4 comming back. I had the cruse at 60 mph all the way.
