Geez, if he uses a F*rd, you could probably pop a ball in your bumper and pull it... Since you are at the very low end of needing the dist. bars, don't pull them up too tight. Just put a bit of tension on them. If you pull them too tight, you just stress your hitch needlessly, and take weight off your rear tires.

Same tongue weight on the truck with both hitches and same load (assuming 9,000 Lbs from me original post) and no equalization. I still don't get it.
This is simple, really. The class 4 hitch is designed to have a 500 lb tongue weight and the class 5 tongue weight is 1000 - 1200 lbs. Since a tag along trailer typically has 10% of the Gross trailer weight on the tongue, this is where the ratings come from. The class 4 can tow 10,000 lbs but will NOT put up with a 1000 lb tongue weight. So, a weight distributing system is used to actually unload some of the weight off the ball and transfer some of the weight ahead of the ball. When towing 10,000 lbs with a weight distributing hitch, the actual weight the ball sees is not anywhere close to 10% of the gross trailer weight. The WD hitch is also a good tool for unloading some of the rear axle weight and transferring to the front.

I'm confused. Where do you get a 500# tongue weight on a Class IV hitch? Here is what the Dodge web site says about their factory installed hitches:

"While it's not listed in the charts, tongue weight [i] is also an important consideration. The recommended tongue weight is between 10 & 15% of the trailer weight. However, the maximum tongue weight on Class III (The bumper ball) is limited to 500 lbs, and Class IV (The receiver hitch) to 1200 lbs.
This requirement overrides any recommended GTW rating, between 10% and 15% of gross trailer weight (GTW). Additionally, the GAWRs and GVWRs should never be exceeded."

Notice they show a 1200# tongue weight. Here is what a Draw-Tite hitch is rated for:

Weight Carrying Capacity: Gross Trailer Wgt.: 10,000 lbs. Tongue Wgt.: 1000 lbs.

Weight Distributing Capacity: Gross Trailer Wgt.: 12,000 lbs. Tongue Wgt.: 1200 lbs.

In comparison, you don't get much more with a Class V:

Weight Carrying Capacity: Gross Trailer Wgt.: 12,000 lbs. Tongue Wgt.: 1200 lbs.

Weight Distributing Capacity: Gross Trailer Wgt.: 14,000 lbs. Tongue Wgt.: 1400 lbs.
