Lost the Fifth-Wheel to a fire
This past Saturday, while towing the fifth-wheel to the dealer for some warranty work, it caught on fire. The thing is a total loss. Fortunately a very nice couple had pulled up next to me to say smoke was coming out the rear vent. After stopping I could see there was nothing I could do to fight the fire with the 5lb Halon bottle I have. I got it unhitched in time to watch it erupt in fire. The weekend before my wife and I had been out in it. Thank God it didn't happen in the middle of the night while in it, the results could have been a lot worse. Fortunately insurance is on it and should have a replacement within 30 days is what they're telling us. If someone can tell me how to attach photos I'll add them.

Sorry for the bad luck, but happy that everyone and the CTD is alright.
Just put the pics in your Members pics and let us know when they are there so we can see it.
Is there any idea as to what caused the fire

First, Thank God that nobody was hurt or worse!
Second, Glad you got the truck unhooked and out of the way.
Third, Do you know what caused it yet? This has often crossed my mind because I tow our 5er and leave the fridge running on gas. I will shut it down when I go in to fuel up at service stations.
Hope you get the rig replaced soon and and didn't lose anything that can't be replaced.
This should be a wake-up call to anyone who has ever asked questions about letting anyone, or even pets ride in towed trailers. I don't imagine it took very long for it to become ingulfed in flames.
Once again, glad everyone is OK.

I always turn off the gas at the bottles when I'm underway. If the fridge is cold, it will stay cold all day if you don't open/close it much. I take a small ice chest with a gallon jug of ice up in the cab for the drive.

Got word from the insurance adjuster the other day that because of the extent of the fire the cause could not be positively identified. But the investigator believes it started at or near the hot water heater. In our model the hot water tank is in the right rear corner where the kitchen area is. My guess is it was most likely an electrical short since we never travel with the propane on. Insurance also says we're within 10 days or so of getting our replacement trailer.

My father and mother-in-law were camping last month in their 5th wl when it caught fire in the middle of the night while they were sleeping, the smoke alarm awoke them, the cause was an electrical short in the refidgerator board.Scarrry thing, they both got out safely, the fridge manfacturer picked up the bill.
