Jake brake sound?

What does an exhaust brake sound like with a straight pipe?
Anything like a big rig?
I understand it is not the same concept but have never heard one.

Have you ever heard a 7.3 powerstroke straight piped when cold. With high idle, sound a lot like that!!!!

real loud hissing sound ???
I had one on my 2000/2004 with straight exhaust I think they are ok with muffler.
In my opinion they don't sound good at all!!!! They do warm the engine fast!!!

I would have to agree with the loud hiss... I like the sound though, turns a lot of heads coming off the highway at high RPMs...

The 5.9 cummins can accept a real jake.....a change in exhaust valve timing. Everyone is thinking of exhuast brake sounds. A jake brake sounds way better.

Sure ugly when you are camped right beside an off ramp from the interstate and you are trying to sleep.

just get a big PA speaker by the exhaust that automatically plays the sound of an actual "jacobs brake" when you turn your exhaust brake on.

That probably describes mine pretty well. At idle, it is a hiss, but when in operation with a load it has a bit more Bbbrrrrr... sound a bit more like an engine brake...

Or if you want the sound of a jake, buy a 7.3 IDI (not powerstroke) ford and downshift it when slowing down or going down a hill! You out to hear mine at 60 comming off the highway downshifting into 2nd (with straight pipe too) hehehehe sounds like a semi with a 6 stage jake!

I read somewhere that the injection setup also plays into weather or not an engine can accept an engine brake, which is why the 5.9 can't take one. You've got to be able to cut the fuel or there'd be raw #2 pumping out the tailpipe, right? Lemmie go dig around...

the 5.9 can't accept a jake...

and if it could, your rear tires would probably be flat spotted the first time you hit it empty
