Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

WITH MY 12,000 LB, 34 FT. 5ER AT 58mph ( BREAK-IN ) I got 14.6 now that I'm in the real world at 70 @ 2100rpms I get between 11 and 12 and was happy. Only got 4500 miles on the truck so that should improve somewhat. Beats the heck out of my FORD GASSER AT 8 MPG. GOING 62 MPH.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Just made a quick trip, about 1800 clicks, averaged about 12 MPG. Towing my ski boat with a 10' camper. It weighs just a little under 16000# GCVW Towed great on the flats, hills made it work pretty hard. Actually I'm a little dissapointed in the power, time to open up my wallet I guess.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Well tomorrow I'll be pulling my trailer for the first time, it's a 23' V-Nose enclosed trailer weighing approx 5000 lbs loaded up for a trip to the sand drags.
The trip is almost all 4 lane interstate & highway.
Speed limit on the interstate is 75, off the interstate it's 65 & 70 with 45 mph going through the small towns.

There are grades that would pull my gas truck (97 Dakota w/318) down to 40 mph (from 70 at the base of the hill).
I never got better than 5mpg with the Dakota & if there was a good head wind it would drop to 4 mpg (I could actually watch the needle on the gas guage drop!!)

My 03 2500 CTD HO Ram is bone stock & has 900 miles on the clock, I'll post my milage Sunday when I get back.
The fuel milage on the Dakota was killing me & the trailer was killing my Dakota!!
I'm hoping for at least 13mpg with my Ram, that's almost tripple what I got with the Dakota.

Looks like a good place to put this. I had just installed the 275 injectors and EZ, made my first heavy loaded trip, up I81 to New York. First two tanks I was very disappointed as it was the worst mileage the truck has ever seen. It got about 9 1/2 going up 81 but got to thinking, 32,700 gross and it was passing everything going up the hills. Felt better later getting one unit off in Deleware and flatter land the mileage came up quite a bit. After getting one more unit off grossing about 21,000 the truck got the best loaded mileage it has ever, almost 13. Coming back empty at 14,400 gross I got right at 13 1/2 to 14 all the way. The trailer is like pulling a parachute, terrible wind problems. Looks like I will average better than original, no free lunch here, use the power and pay for it. The power put a big smile on my face though ;D

Normal running yesterday, Birmingham to Blue Ridge, Ga to Childersburg, Al to Attala, Al to Alabaster and home, some improvement in mileage from before the EZ and 275's. Two tanks showed an increase of 1/2 mpg or so. That was running hard, 70 to 75 mph loaded probably 28,000 or a little less. Love the power, can say that the rear axle windup is maxed, needs some strengthening.

I just got back from a 1500 mi round trip through NE and KS pulling 30'TT and truck loaded with canoe, generator, fuel and firewood. Probably gross 15K. With an EZ, I got 13mpg from Cheyenne to Ogallala, NE. Lost the turnbuckle, fell off somewhere and got 12 after that. Typical wind.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Just a short trip with my 5000# V-nose trailer to the sand drags, fairly hilly terain, in OD running the cruise control & A/C cranked, averaging 70 mph.
Trip computer & dividing milage by gallons needed to fill up= 11.5 mpg.

I'm a bit dissapointed but I wasn't really trying for optimum milage by using the cruise all the way & running the A/C, but It only has 1250 miles on the odometer & it is pretty hilly, I'm hoping for better mpg when I go to Little Sahara, it's quite a bit flatter on that trip.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

DId a 6000 mile round trip from La.to Az. To northern California this summer. Pulled a 30 ft gooseneck with 3 fourwheelers and a truck full of kids and gear to Tuscon. Mostly flat but some hills and all interstate (I-10). Drove 75 and got 11-12 mpg. On way back I added a tractor and 3000 pounds of flagstone. Total weight including trailer was about 14,000 lbs. Driving 75 I got 10 mpg. She seemed to pull the best at around 2600 rpm which i think was around 80 mph.

I 've pulled both a tt and enclosed trailers, heavey and light not much difference, I usually figure 9-11 mpg when i go somewhere, and thats pretty close. With just the truck I get 13-15 mpg, I usually drive 70-80 mph. Truck is about 8100 lbs, gooseneck is 12,500 give or take a few.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

17.3 mpg pulling a pop-up at 70mph (based on a 1600 mile trip I recently took). Probably only 3300lbs or so loaded including weight in the bed. Top of the trailer is flush with the top of the bed and I have a tonneau cover so it's a pretty aerodynamic package.

17.7 mpg average for all the driving I've done since new. Some has been with the trailer, some without.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Pulling at 55 mph with a full load (22k GCVW) the best I have got is 14.0 doing the math not the dodge console deal ;D. If I drive loaded at 60+ the mileage really starts to drop, ie 65 mph will get 10 mpgs or less :P. Unloaded at 55 I have in the past got 23 mpg :Last week driving unloaded at 75+ mph I averaged 18 mpg from Sacramento CA to Seattle WA.

I have found that while towing, watching and keeping EGTs at the lowest temp is the key to fuel mileage.
