Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

I did some interesting tests this past week pulling the fiver - - 16000 pound, 12'8" high. Using the computer for five mile sections on the interstate, level road on cruise not touching the pedal, no hills, nothing.

50 mph - - 13.9 mpg
60 mph - - 12.3 mpg
70 mph - - 10.9 mpg

Guess that shows what wind resistance does to mileage.

I ran a little over 200 miles last week pulling the fiver, 30 on interstate, the rest on county and city roads, lots of stops, maneuvering in State Park campground, etc. Never got over 60 mph (except the little bit on interstate which was not included in this mileage) and averaged 12.2 mpg. Not bad.

I ran my truck on a trip for the first time empty yesterday and today. Running empty above 2000 rpm's uses a lot more gas than below 2000rpm's.
Pulling my trailer has the same results. Keep it right below 2000 rpm's for me yeilds the best trade for speed versus mpg running empty or pulling.*
Ruben, my 2001 Ford never did get above 20 mpg
Your mileage may vary, ;D

* mountains excluded

Dodge 3500 HO 6sp 410 rearends Exhaust Brake Quad Cab SLT GCVW 22,760# 36 foot Carri Lite.
Empty mileage between 17 and 19 mpg. Towing a consistent 12 mpg. Could not be any happier. Better numbers than my 01 and it was towing less weight.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Just did over 1200 miles with 9400 pounds total weight of trailer and strongman gear. The mileage was good...14.6 mpg at an average of 110 KMH or around 70 MPH.
Thats with about 400 and change HP the way the truck is now compared to the last trip with more HP. So the mileage actually dropped a bit. Not a lot but lower.

By the way, did I mention the new truck is a black Sport?
tick tick tick

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

:'( :'( 8.5k TT doing as fast as I can (maybe 65 to 70 with tail wind) I get around 10 mpg. I am doing something wrong or have some kind of a problem because I can"t tow as fast as others post and I don't get very good fuel economy. My old beat-up 2500 suburban towed better and didn't get much worse mileage.

How big of a difference do you think it makes towing a camper vs. towing an open trailer (e.g. a car trailer or a utility trailer) would make? Wondering how much the huge brick aerodynamics make on MPG vs. just plain heavy loads.

Depends on the trailer, pulling a wedge car hauler is like pulling a parachute.

Actual mileage (not computer) for a two week trip entirely in the Cascades with almost no freeway driving, 12.8 MPG, US gallons. About 80 percent of this was towing.

2001 CTD 2500 auto, 4.10's, towing a 28E33 Titanium fiver 12'4" high. CGW 16800 lb. I never tow faster than 65 MPH.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

My mileage sounds similar. I just pulled about 7000lbs 6800 kms (4200 miles). I too checked the computer at various speeds

55 mph = 12.5 mpg
65 mph = 11.5 mpg
75 mph = 10.5 mpg

I did manage to get it down to 8.0 mpg circling at a very steep university campus while my wife shopped for a Tshirt from her alma mater :.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

1,200 mile round trip from PA to SC primarily on I95 towing 9k 5th wheel, I averaged 9.9 (hand calculated) travelling about 70-75 in OD with the A/C on. This is about the same mileage that I got last year from PA to FL before I added the Edge EZ. However, the power difference since adding the EZ is HUGE. I think a big factor in my towing mileage is the wind resistance from the 5th wheel.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Just got back from an 8400 mile trip to alaska and I averaged 16.8 mpg for the trip. Carried a camper and grossed out at 9540 lbs. I had two tanks that went over 18mpg but that was in a 50 mph speed zone.

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

We just made a trip[ to Iowa to pick up a tractor. Me, my son, truck full tank of fuel, goose neck trailer and tractor the CAT scale weighed us at 20,100.
We figured the miles divided by the gallons and came up with the worst as 9.5 and the best at 13.4. But along with that I have to figure that some was stop and go, some was pop the hood at a rest stop and let her idle while we went to the rest room.
I am very happy with my truck. I have a BHAF and my EGTs went down about 100 degrees. Going through the WV turnpike (I77) the highest temp was 1100/1200 thats running 55/65 mph.
I have a 2001 HO 6 speed with 4:10s along with a Edge EZ and DDII and some other goodies to make it stop better among other things ;D ;D
See Ya
Chris

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Looks like a good place to put this. I had just installed the 275 injectors and EZ, made my first heavy loaded trip, up I81 to New York. First two tanks I was very disappointed as it was the worst mileage the truck has ever seen. It got about 9 1/2 going up 81 but got to thinking, 32,700 gross and it was passing everything going up the hills. Felt better later getting one unit off in Deleware and flatter land the mileage came up quite a bit. After getting one more unit off grossing about 21,000 the truck got the best loaded mileage it has ever, almost 13. Coming back empty at 14,400 gross I got right at 13 1/2 to 14 all the way. The trailer is like pulling a parachute, terrible wind problems. Looks like I will average better than original, no free lunch here, use the power and pay for it. The power put a big smile on my face though ;D
