Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Denver to Oklahoma is down hill and a little slower speeds on the two lane. On the old Detroit I used to get almost 1 mpg better between Wyoming and Birmingham when going southeast. That was on a 4 mpg average. One thing that everyone forgets is that it takes a certain amount of heat to produce a certain amount of horsepower and that converts to the mpg that can be obtained in any circumstance given load, wind, and elevation. Engineers have a formula, I don't but have seen these. I used to get 18 mpg in a ford pickup with a 302. Put the same engine in a van and never could get up to 15. To a large degree you get what you pay for, the engine has to overcome the weight (rolling resistance), the head wind (frontal area) and the elevation loss in oxygen) for the speed that you decide to travel. I can get better mileage at 60, been there, but I run 75 all the time. I pay for it.

..and then comes the day you're heading straight into a helluva head wind. You can't even get the speedometer to go up to 60mph. Milage that day = 7.81mpg. Geez.<br><br>My first-gen and the little 5er (not *full* height, no slides) at 62-65 gets 12.3 average. I usually travel a little faster and pay if I'm on the interstates. If I'm on the Alcan, I get better mileage because I'm going slower and looking around.'<br><br>Regards, DBF<br>

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Just got back from a 41,000 k/m round trip, left Alberta Canada last July 14, and was all over most of the central and eastern part of the US. Out of the 41000 I guess I pulled my 30 ft. fifth wheel about 20,000 k/m which made it quite confusing to figure out the fuel mileage, as I left the figuring go till I was back......................that was my mess up. But hopefully I can redeem my self...........This weekend, we are all loaded up and heading for the hills.<br><br>Some statistics; Total gross weight almost 18,000 lbs with the truck having 10,000 lbs on its back. And its only registered for 8800. But I will come back with my MPG this Sunday evening.<br><br>Oh Sick<br>

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Got back from the weekend camping trip, 272 k/m or 170 Miles round trip, with my 30' 17000 lb GW fifth wheel. It turned out to be 13 1/2 mpg US gal, 16 mpg Can gal. So I guess that's not to bad.<br><br>Oh Sick <br>

Re:Honest fuel mileage with camp trailers/campers...

Our 2500 diesel averages 12mpg towing a 5th wheel weighting<br>around 9000 lbs. It never seems to get worse or better no matter how we drive, but recently, towing uphill towards<br>10,000 feet our mileage dropped to 10mpg. <br>But empty; that is where to Dodge shines, 18-21 mpg, that<br>is 21mpg cruiseing at 65mph, 19, cruising at 70mph.<br>We are happy with that.<br>Of course, if you are from Texas, and own a Ford as most of them do, then you get 20mpg or more all the time. HAHAHAH

My 01' 2500HD 4x4 LB with a K&amp;N air filter as my only upgrade averages 10mpg pulling a 28ft goose hi-deck that weights 5,500 lbs empty plus two Jeeps on it. (mmm probably around 4k lbs each)<br><br>Roads can make a huge difference... Oklahoma... I lose at least a mile per gallon due to the rough highways they have.
