The last time I made a trailer out of old truck bed. I just went to the Sec. of State and got a title for a homebuilt trailer. They told me what serial number to put on it and that was it. I think it can vary with the GTW you want. That was in Illinois about 8 or 10 years ago.

I've made buggys and trailers and only needed to go to a DMV office for an inspection and they attach ID tags and give you registration and license plates. That is for California. I don't see where you are located in your profile.

It will vary depending on your state. I picked up a trailer made from a pickup box in GA and it did not ever have plates on it. I took it down and it may have been an option as it was classified as a homemade trailer. As I traveled around the country I opted to get plates and registration. In several states I had to buy tabs each year. In Idaho I got tabs for I think 10 years. Contact your state Dept of Licensing to get the facts.
