Re:Hitch ball mount drop
What does most used mean? I had a couple of 4 inchers laying around and use them with a 1 7/8" ball and another with a 2" ball.

I have a 4" drop for my utility trailer - but would prefer a 6; and my boat trailer ballmount doesn't really have any drop and the trailer sits level - I had the ball mounted in the low position.

Re:Hitch ball mount drop
hmmm, I think people most use the one that works for their particular truck and trailer? hmmmmm? Like I said, they're all different.

oh, you don't have a trailer but hope too some day? But need a ball mount "just in case"? Get a 4 inch drop. You can figure out the ball size.

You have to be careful about how much drop you use and the rating of the
stinger. The farther away from straight out of the receiver, the lower the
weight of the trailer you can safely pull. Things will start bending at the
weakest point.

Re:Hitch ball mount drop
I had to buy draw-tites longest available drop 11'' to get a good hook up on my trailer $107.00. I dont beleive drop affects load rating as stated above , however if you extend further towards the rear you are creating a lever effect. I guess it depends on the hitch , draw-tite equalizing hitch drops 11'' straight down. non equalizing drop hitches may extend reaward at an angle to effect the drop so more drop could calculate to more length less weight capacity.

If you go here, you can see what the drop does to the rating, at least for
the tube type stingers. It looks like the solid stinger would be best in any
application, from these guys anyway, maybe other manufacturers have
different ratings.

http://www.kwikhitch.com/hitches/drawbars.htm

Only things I've found that take more than a 6" drop are small boat trailer, and small utility trailer.
While I have accumulated many inserts, I'd recommend that you save your money by spending a bit more the first time. Purchase an adjustable unit. Can be had in many weight ratings, and allow for approx. 5" rise to 6": drop.
Draw-Tite, Reese, etc. offer them.
One of these will cover you for most needs, and they're available for around $60.
There is also a fairly new aluminum unit that is real 8) Few more $, but it's only money. Carries a 1k/10k weight rating if I remember correctly. Can't remember name for sure, but might be "Quick Draw" ???

Good luck

Best thing to do is head to the nearest shopping mall. Usually a good selection of drops, ball sizes, and locking mechanisms. A little bit of window shopping and your backseat will be full with various sizes in no time...
And you can sell the ones you don't need, as there will be a need for them in this area

Re:Hitch ball mount drop
My utility needs an 8" drop mount with my 4x2 Ram for the trailer to run level. When hauling my with front loader and rear blade my eaz-lift gives only 6". This results in the front tires (tandem axles) rearing twice as fast as the rear axle tires.

Re:Hitch ball mount drop
As has been said back up there. Will vary greatly depending on what you pull. As stated before, if you have to drop very low, I would prefer the adjustable mount as it will come closer to keeping good weight ratings as you get lower.
my .02
wk
