In modern circles...it's questionable whether a split washer performs any useful funtion other than slight preload during assembly. The US Dept. of defense has outlawed them except where self locking (nylon patch, etc.) cannot be used. Bellville (conical) washers are peferred.

There's really some interesting reading available on the web if you're interested.

Yes I've heard that some experts claim lock washers make the nut more prone to vibrating off, as always opinions seem to vary.

truckjunkie,

I dont think I would worry about hauling a little ol jeep behind your truck, I think maybe you are getting a little **** about it. 'Course Ive been accused of that by my brothers myself. I have had about 13.5K on my truck w/out any weight distribution, had to have a little over 1k on tounge. I drove the weight on/off on/off watching for any deflection, didnt see any. After the first SHORT tow, I looked very carefully for stress cracks or wrinkles or loose paint or anything indicating excessive flex at the hitch, I did not find any. I did special order a 2 5/16" ball rated at 12K with a 1" shank. My receiver hitch is rated at 40K w/1k tounge weight, Its a schuck cushion hitch. Go get your jeep and DONT worry about it.

Well the way I see it, if you don't have the weight distrubution hitch and the trailer isn't swaying then you are doing alright. However if it starts swaying you better slow down, and not by using the brakes. More tongue weight keeps the trailer less likely for sway, right?
