Heavy Haul Report
Well this past week end I got to use the truck for the original reason I got it finally, to pull 2 trucks at a time to off-road events.

The trailer is a 40’ tandem dually rated for 24,000#. Truck 1 is a 1975 R/C and number 2 is a 1983 W350.

I took it to the scale just to see how much weight was their, I knew I would be over the 23,000# rating before I even started all this but figured the Dodge could handle it.

Front Axle = 4,720lb (5,200lb rated)
Rear Axle = 7,140lb (9,350lb rated)
Total truck = 11,860lb (12,000lb rated)

Trailer axle = 18,120lb (24,000lb rated)

Total GCVW = 29,980lb (23,000lb rated)

These weights all included full fuel in all but the R/C, me, and miscellaneous camping gear and parts.

The dually sat pretty level with the load on it, you definitely loose the ride in the rear end though, the bumps get a bit more harsh.

Now for the pulling part. I have an Edge EZ running it on level 4, DPP 4” exhaust and a BD X-Monitor to keep everything in check. Also have a Scotty Air III on the way that isn’t here just yet.

First max reading from the X-Monitor.

Fuel Pressure = none, they sent me the wrong wire harness so I don’t have it up yet.
Turbo Boost = 38.1
EGT Temp = 1220 deg

Traveled down one stretch of interstate at 70mph for about 20 miles. Set the cruise and the thing pulled great and hung right in their on the hills. Full throttle up hills got the EGT at around 1175 and the boost at 32. The 1220 reading was going up the on ramp full throttle through the gears. The rest of the trip was 2 lane roads with rolling hills and the cruise set at around 62mph. The EGT at full throttle on this road was hard to get above 1050 must be because of the lower rpm at lower speeds. Still pulled good and had lots of power for the hills.

I am very pleased and surprised how well it pulls the big load. The EZ makes the thing totally different to pull with. I couldn’t be happier. I expected to have EGT problems, that is why the Scotty is on the way, but it will still be a good thing as the filter minded gets sucked down to 65% with a clean filter now, so it wants more air.

OMG its my wish list sitting right there .
I was wandering if you had to have a CDL to pull that big trailer? I will be makeing a trip to FL to pick up a tractor and bush-hog this summer and my friend has a trailer just like that. he said that I need a CDL to pull it. I hope not becuase that means I need to take two trailers and not just one like I want to.
great looking truck/s
DM01

Yes you need a CDL if it is over 26,000#, you need a class "A" CDL actually. I have one so am not worried about it. I guess you are "suppose" to stop at the scales also :

Re:Heavy Haul Report
is that actual weight or what the trailer can hold? I don't think I will be over 26000. it is just a small 60hp tractor and 15' bat wing bush hog. I pull a dozer that I know puts me over 26000 on a smaller drag all the time. can I still pull the trailer even If it was empty?
DM01

I like the new units in red.

I do have a question though about your EGTs and boost. I didn't see if you had went pre- or post-turbo on the probe, but if you're pre-turbo, those temps seem to be low for a loaded 03. Do have another gauge handy to check the X-monitor against? My 03 HO stock would run up to 1300F with a light load and the stocker airbox, and we've had other customers with much the same results. Although, you are pulling another 4 PSI boost more than what an EZ typically gives you, so that could account for the temp differential.

Rod

Re:Heavy Haul Report
That is pre turbo yes, I got it in where the #3 cylender comes into the manifold. That is the only place I could really get it to fit good. I also thought it seemed a little low, but the water temp was not showing any rise either. It runs about 510 deg cruising at 60 empty if that gives you any better indication of things.
I don't have another guage to through at it either ???
What results have exhaust been giving you? The DPP exhuast really seems to flow good compared to the stock.

Nice units) and talked things over with him. He's been seeing around 75F - 125F reductions at power. I didn't ask about cruise, but I wouldn't think it would be much more than 25F or so, as we're just not firing that much fuel through the truck at cruise.

That 510 mark is also considerably lower than what I'm used to seeing. My stock truck would run 650 at 70 mph cruise, and with the ram air on it, around 625 or so.

Tell you what, PM with your name (if you ordered the III from us, I'll have your address. If not, give me your address too). I've got a used pyro here whose accuracy has been verified (we use it for EGT verification of suspect gauges) and I'd be more than happy to ship it out to you, if you want to hook it up and give it a go. You don't need to mount the gauge, just simply stuff it down in the 4x4 boot. After you've verified your results, I'll get you to ship it back to me.

Rod

Re:Heavy Haul Report
I pulled my travel trailer this weekend with the EZ for the first time. With out EZ - I couldn't get EGT over 1100. With it, it screams right up to 1400 no problem. I also have 4" exhaust - still waiting for Scotty III to show up (just ordered last week). I was actually able to get 1400 with the unloaded truck as well - Not sure how high it will go - I didn't let it go beyon 1400, and it was only there for a split second. I try to keep it UNDER 1300. How much RPM were you running up to ? If I kept rpm under 2500, I wouldn't see as high temps. I also saw lots of boost - burried the 35 lb gauge - I would guess 37, 38, maybe 39. I don't think it went as high as 40..but it is a guess after it passes the last marks on the guage.
