GVWR question
What is the most weight that a 4x4 1 ton dually can pull legally. My buddy is thinking of purchasing a Track hoe and already has a heavy duty goose neck trailer. Can he pay extra on his tag to be able to haul extra heavy.
Secondly anybody know what the GVWR for the 4500 and 5500 are, in relation to the same above question.
thanks Jamie

it depends on what 'legal' you are talking about
the manufacturer gives a real low gcwr. but the general theory is, as long as you don't go over yoru tire/axle ratings, and have the correct license for the weight (may need cdl) you will be fine
IE
My truck has a gcwr of 18,000 lbs according to dodge. I've hauled 20k easily many times, and I am tagged for up to 25k

The GCVWR (Truck,Trailer and any cargo of both) is 21,000lbs for 3.73 gears and 23,000lbs for 4.10s. It doesn't matter in that regard whether it is a dually, srw3500 or 2500 truck on the 3rd gens. Remember that is the ratings from DC. We all know the trucks will pull much more than that.
The dually will up the GVWR though.....truck and it's cargo weight. They have a 12,200lb GVWR. SRW 3500 is 9900lbs and 2500 is 9000.

Jmac: As you are in Florida, if your 1 ton weighs over 8,000#, you are a "heavy truck" by definition, and must declare the maximum GVW of the truck, the trailer and cargo. My 2005 4x4 CTD 6spd w/toter bed, full fuel, me behind wheel weighed in at 8,200#. I declared 25,999 for tagging. If you declare a combination over 26,001 in FLORIDA, Chapter 320 makes you commercial by definition (for vehicle license) and you need a COMMERCIAL INSURANCE POLICY. If you have a fifth wheel, you might be considered a "truck tractor", as you carry a portion of the trailer weight, as opposed to "drawing" it (which makes you a "truck" by definition). That is what you can TAG it for and not have a problem w/commercial insurance. As for what Dodge says it is RATED for, others have already answered. My 05' 4x4 has a GVWR of 12,200 on the door post decal. You can type in "Florida statute" in a search engine which will bring you to the legislative site, where you can review the 2006 statutes, or you can type in "Florida DMV" and find the state site HSMV, which has copies of the tagging agency handbook, which tells agents how to tag vehicles, and defines everything you are looking for.
