Fifth Wheel Recomendation Please for Mega Cab

Hi Everybody, I am in need of some help. I have a 2006 Dodge Mega Cab short box 4x4 and I need a fifth wheel hitch for it. I have been talking to Pullrite customer service and asked them about their Super 5 hitch, they told me not for the Mega Cab, even the sliding Pullrite hitch is a problem for Mega Cab owners according to pullrite.

Are there any hitches out there for us Mega Cab owners?

That's funny, JuzPlaneKrazy has a SuperGlide on his Megacab and I don't think he has had any issues. I'm not sure why they'd tell you that.

Any sliding hitch would be fine.

Well, here is my experience. I just got a Keystone Raptor 3814SS and I wanted to pay the money to get an 18K Pullrite SuperGlide. Well, After emailing with them numerous times, they said the only auto slider that would work for a 102" wide toy hauler would be their 24K SuperGlide. This is a huge overkill and really expensive. I ended up going with a 16K Reese, with the Sidewinder attachment for the Pin Box. I have a hitch that is 1/3 the cost of a slider and do not have to worry about releasing the lever, so it works for me. It may not work for everyone, but I wanted the ease of an auto slider, but I wasn't going to go with a 24K slider that was 3x more money and would do the same thing as what I have. The MegaCab is a tough nut for the slider folks, seems the way the cab is shaped and the length of the bed makes wide 5th wheels something of a PITA. Scotty

Don't waste your money on anything else. It's simple to install yourself too.


The 18K is fine, you can't haul anything more than that anyways.
So who ever you talked to at Pullrite was wrong.

I looked at the Sidewinder too, but decided it was to new to try. I'm happy with this. I would never want a manual slider..... I'm to lazy for that.
My hitch was 1800.00 total.

I love my superglide model 3300 rated for 16K but this is on my shortbed "QC". It really helps when I have to jack knife to back in my drive. I have about 20,000 miles on the hitch no problems. I tow a 2004 Open Road 357rlds about 37' with 3 slides. The brackets for the hitch bolt to the frame and I am thinking maybe that something on your frame is in the way of bolting the brackets.

I am installing a rear sway bar on my shortbed and I will have to have the hanging brackets for the sway bar welded to the frame. Thats because the bracket for the superglide are in the way of using the u-bolts.

I have seen at least two shortbeds that do not use a slider ( both dodge QC). It can be done, just be extra careful.

Standard Reese 16K with quick rails $700.00, standard Sidewinder 700.00.
$1,400.00 So sure you could go that way and save 400.00.
Wasn't in the cards for me, I like the Superglide.

Bed rail height is more of a worry.

Here are a couple more options:

Colibert Rail Rider - about $1600 including gooseneck

B & W Turnoverball with Companion 5th wheel hitch and Sidewinder - about $1600

There are several options available, just depends on what direction you want to take.

tank 146: see if Juzplanekrazy will make you a template for drilling the holes in the bed and the rest is doable. Remember that hitch is very heavy.

The PullRite 24,000 lb slides back 24 inches and the 18,000 lb slides back 14 inches. They probably thought you needed the 24 inches for proper clearance.

Good point c5racer, TANK146 check the location of your pin, if it's at the front of the cap you will be fine with the 18K sliding back (14"). My trailer is 102" wide and I miss the cab by 4".
If the pin is under the front of the cap thats where more slide is needed.
Most of the newer trailers are built with the pin at the cap.

Pauly is correct that there are other options out there. Research them all. I personnaly went for a proven slider hitch.

Thanks for all the help guys, now I am more confused as ever. I have a 1988 26ft tavelaire 5th wheel, no slides, I am thinking the cap is 8ft, there is currently an extension on the "neck of the trailer" so I think the trailer will tow further back anyways?????????

Sorry I sound like an idiot, this is my first trailer. I phoned our local Reese dealer and I can get a manual sliding hitch for around 1100 Canadian.

I agree with c5racer that this is the issue they(pullrite) are confusing. Make sure you know the actual width of your trailer and that should clear it up.

You should be fine with the smaller pullrite. I love mine.

Check those measurements. I think the older 5th wheels would tuck the pin under the front of the 5th wheel body, whereas newer units seem to have a more extended pin box like in the diagram. With a short bed you need that pin forward of the body of the 5'ver.
