Does anyone here ever tow thier 4wd ram truck
Sometimes we have to move multiple one ton trucks around the country for our work.We have a 4wd 97 ram 2500 that we would like to know if its ok to pull it four wheels down with the transfer case in neutral. The oldest list I can find is for 02 and they approve the 4wd ram ,chevy and ford with manual transfer cases and auto trans. If anyone here has pulled thir 4wd 97 or so dodge please let me know, thanx

I have towed my 2000 2500 4wd about 1200 miles each of the last 3 years with no problems by using the transfer case in nuetral method. Make sure the alignment is good on the vehicle being towed or it will push the towing vehicle around.

It should be just fine as long as the Tcase is in neutral. I've read a couple stories on here about people that got towed a long distance with the tranny in neutral which was bad news for the tranny.

I'm no expert, but that don't seem right, seems like the tranny needs to be in park (auto) or a gear (Manual) If I am mistaken then I apologize in advance...
Not wanting to irritate Gotmeat, but I'd think a output shaft on an auto spinning without lubrication would be bad.

I've rebuilt 50 or so auto's in my time, and you won't have any lube flowing in many bearings doing that, how much damage will occur , I don't really know, I guess how long a bearing can run dry is anyone's guess. I manual will sling the lube, but an auto depends on the pump. It wouldn't be a bad idea to start it up every couple stops and roll it with it running, or pull the u-joint straps, and tie up the rear of the driveshaft.

another vote for disconnecting your drive shaft.
if you're pulling one time across the country, dropping shaft is not that big a deal. doing it all the time would be a pita!

Keep the trans in park, case in neutral. just like my owners manual says for my 03. I have made a few custom tow bar setups for rv hotshotr teams and have one myself. I used one many times on my old 95 2wd auto. I just let it idle in neutral from Baton Rouge LA. to Elkhart, IN, costs about $12 for the 19 hour trip. Never any problems. But dont do it with the engine off, as everyone said the trans wont pump and it will go bad. But the 4x4 is simple, just go neutral. I've towed my 03 7 or 8 times home from Baton Rouge with no problems. I just keep my tow bar in case my truck breaks down I can easily run and get it. And it was free because I made it myself, very heavy duty. Thats how I sold a few of them, people would see it and ask where I got it and I made them one.
