Re:do i need a different brake controller
I had a similar problem on my 5th wheel. It took me quite a few tries to finally figure out the problem. It was erratic and at first seemed like a grounding problem. After checking all the wiring and connections the brakes seemed to work ok for a while, but eventually the problem would come back. Finally after replacing all the wiring still with no success, I disconnected all 4 brakes and hooked up one at a time. The 1st and 2nd brakes worked ok (no blinking light on the control). When I hooked up the 3rd brake, the light started to blink on the control. I disconnected it and hooked up the 4th brake it worked fine. I then reconnected the 3rd brake and it started to blink. I tried wiggling the wires but it didn't make a difference. I finally replaced the magnet with a new one and the problem went away. (Who knows???)

Also a trailer repair man told me that sometimes when wire are run through the axle, the insulation can wear thru from the vibration going down the road. Water can get inside the axle and cause erratic shorting. If in doubt, try disconnecting the wires routed through the axles and run some across on the outside to test.
