Cushioned draw bar?

Anybody ever use one a lot? I'm going to be getting my own to keep in the truck along witha convert-a-ball. I'm sick of trying to find the right size and usually my brother or dad has it in his truck so I'm just going to get my own. But, I was curious if they get sloppy over time, maybe the urethane wears out inside of them?

My neighbor has one on his pickup. He pulls a 16 ft stocktrailer and whatever. It's about a year old, and seems to be about the same as the first time I rode with him. He does remove it when not needed, so that would prolly help.

I am interested in this also, matt, If you got any good prices around there let me know. I just pulled a gravity box overfilled with 5ton of dried beans up about 8 miles of crappy paved road, and 4 miles of rutted and potholed gravel, all with a too small of pin in the tongue and my reciever hitch took alot of the abuse! I need either a dmi bumper with the cushion hitch or one of these cushion reciever drawbars.

I too have been wondering about these. When I had my '99 the hitch had a lot less play/slop in the reciever when compared to my 04.5. When I'm towing I can hear it rocking around in there a fair bit.

Shawn, I think the cheapest I've found around here is about $55.

I'm not gonna screw around with one of those slide-in reciever deals, several guys around here have em on their trucks, put a little concern in me when i see em used with tounge weight put on em. At the moment I still have the stock reciever hitch that came on the truck, but shortly its going to get ripped off, along with the bumper, and a DMI is going on. No reciever stuff here, I want the drawbar.

Yeah, gotta love a gravity box on a pickup truck. I don't anything does as much pushing, shoving and rocking on the hitch as those things. Been there many times.

I would highly recommend a Schuck Cushioned hitch. I have the Model 750-RT-R hitch. I wouldn't go back to a DMI. The Schuck works MUCH better. The DMI is better than a standard drawbar, but only cuts about half of the jerking. The Schuck gets rid of almost all of the jerking. Even the heavy sileage wagons and Anhydrous Ammonia tanks aren't to bad. It is also easy to rebuild, if necessary, and you still have the versatility of the receiver. Also, you won't loose the spare tire under the truck, with the Schuck.

The DMI costs about the same as the 750-RT-R, but that is the hitch only. The mounting kit is about another $100.

Now, if you get to a farm show, like I did, you can get one at a better price. I got mine on sale, and since they brought some with them, I didn't have a shipping charge. Got mine for about $200-225, but that was about 2 1/2 yrs ago.

Just my 2 cents.

A local commercial truck supply shop has some recivers that have a large spring behind them that the hitch attaches to, is this what you're talking about or the ones that fit a standard reciever containing a urethane bushing?

Never used that type. Would think it would work fine, depending on how heavy you tow. IIRC, the one I have is rated for 1k/40k, not 1k/10k.

I'm with bmoeller on this one, I have a schuck 750-rt-r hitch also. Works great for pulling wagons, you almost dont feel them at all, plus with the swing feature it A LOT EASIER to hook up to a loaded wagon by yourself. I also like mine when pulling my little 5 x 10 trailer, you no longer 'feel' the trailer on small bumps ( its rougher to pull than dads 7.5 x 20 equipment trailer ) and yep its rated at 1k tounge and 40k total weight. I just need a better receiver.

I've had a Schuck Model 340 for several years. It's rated at 750# tongue and 20,000# load. I've never heard of anyone having trouble with them. I only use mine for pulling wagons. I always need a drop for most trailers. One of my neighbors has a hitch similar to a DMI but uses a reciever instead of a drawbar. I'm not sure what brand it is but it looks pretty slick.

DMI makes one like that.

My choice (budget restricted) is between a regular cushioned drawbar, or the 4-way cushioned one that also has the bushings vertically.. There's a ~$20 difference (60 vs. 80) in the price.. is the vertical damping worth it?
