Cummins Vs Ford V10
#16
I wouldn't waste #2 in a contest with a Ford V-10...
a Dodge V-10, however, is a different story - 488 cubes, great fuel/spark engine management, and more torque/HP than the Cummins from idle on up (at least on my '98).
Nothing passed us in that '98 'til the 3rd gens came out.

same here brother, my V10 was horrible on mileage and needed alot of work but the motor itself took a heck of a beating and it kept on running somewhat smoothly. a friend of mine had a low output 2003 and he would get mad when i told him ALL THE TIME my truck had more power and torque than his.

My 06 f-250 reg cab 4x4 v-10 auto 5 spd would flat out haul unloaded, 4.10 gears, got 12-14, i hand calced every tank i put in her, 362 hp and 457 ft lbs....pulling 10k she would still flat out move...
I am confident the truck in my sig would smoke one with 15k or more....stock vs stock unloaded....i would not have a chance
I still sometimes miss the smoothness and the peppyness of that 3valve v-10

any time, any place, any load ill go head to head with him
i had a 2000 ford v10 with 4.56's absolutely no comparison, pulling my 5er it was 2nd gear with a headwind to maintain 55 mph,
the intelligence of the uninformed never ceases to amaze me

I think this guy is on to something. Maybe he can sell gassers to long haul truckers. I dont know how some people get through life being so dumb

It's apples-to-oranges.
Extra cylinders/displacement vs. 30+ psi of boost.
Compression ignition vs. spark.
Low-tech fuel vs. highly refined fuel
They're completely different animals.
Diesels provide:
- easier-to-access heavy-load performance (no need to rev)
- significantly reduced fuel consumption
- significantly longer engine life at high-load conditions
If any or all of these things are important to you, then diesels are the way to go.
It's easy to race loaded trucks up short hills, and get similar results.
Make those hills 10 miles long, perfrorm the tests hourly over a period of months or years, and see which engine lasts longest.

Not only engines but tranny to. I had a gas engine i towed with and on a grade it would shift up and down all the way up the hill. with the diesel the tranny stays where it should.

Nibble? I would think a V-10 would be more like Gobble!

"Heck, a mopar stock 180hp 318 is a towing monster with 4.30 gears!!"
My '85 with 2bbl. 318, A904 and 4:10 was pretty underpowered. There were times with only 6,000 lbs behind it that I would wonder if I was going to make it home. Afton Mountain in Va. would pull it down to 25 mph in 2nd with 6K behind it!

The Ford V10 has the same transmission behind it that the powerstroke has. It kept up with the diesels in the pickup comparo noted above.
Would I buy one? Maybe... New, probably not for my use. But for a used work truck I'd look at one. I think they fit a nice niche.
If I need a beater oil field or bush truck I'd probably buy a v10 ford.

We have 100s of 460s and v10s in the company vanpool and I'm a driver. The 460s run better than the v10s. I've had sticks with my CTD so either would probably do me in (when mine were stock) empty but I know I"ve flown around a bunch of 460 and v10 little MHs in the mtns. I've driven a 6l psd and that trans sure works better with the psd and it sucks behind the v10s.

Bring it!
A good friend made the mistake of buying the Ford F250 with the V10. The first trip out with it he learned his lesson when he pulled his 3K lb. travel trailer.
Here's the whole story. My other friend had just bought a 04.5 Dodge Cummins 600 and pulls a 7K toy hauler. I had my 555 motor which was stock at the time pulling a 4K trailer. We all decided to go camping together.
On the way back we all convoyed with the 600 up front, 555 second, V10 third. We hit the bottom of the first big hill (6% grade) when I hear over the walkie-talkie our V10 friend saying "holler if you need a push"
I was staying with the 600 doing about 65 MPH when we crested the hill, I looked back for V10 and could not see him. I got on the radio and asked if he was OK....all I got was a sheepish "Yes". Mr. V10 has driven my truck when loaded and is always amazed at the power of the Cummins. He said that he would put a Cummins in his truck if he could afford it.
