Now does anybody understands private and non private ?
If your hauling your own junk. Your private. If you haul for hire, have a business, or work for a business where you run trucks over 10k you fall into FMSCA rules. You can likely get away with hauling your friend's and family's junk also, but just be careful that you tell the officer you are doing it for free.

Look in your driver hand book (not comercial carriers book) for your state to determine what you are legal to do without a CDL. Federal Limit is Combinations up to 26k lbs, with a provision if a trailer is 10k or less the combo can be 36k. My state follows that guidline, but not all states do.

I would agree with that. Thats why I bought my stuff to stay under the 26k limit.

Anyhow asked about them about IFTA sticker & DOT number, They said not required unless the vehicle is tagged for over 26,001. We have IFTA & DOT #'s on our rollback & tractor trailer which is a given! They also told me that if you are towing over 10k you need a class A no matter if you are under 26,001 total gross. Didnt mention med card, but in 14 years of havin my A & stopped or inspected at the scale house I've never been asked to show mine.

eight yrs ago I got stopped in CT w/a 12' tandem axle enclosed that had our
biz name on the side & he asked f/my dot#,logbook & med card I played dumd so he said he'd just give me a speeding ticket well 2yrs ago I got pulled over in Ia w/a 20' enclosed w/o ny name on the side & I told him I was moving my friends stuff he probably would of bought the story but he took my friend w/me in his car & he told him the truth, that we were going to a show to sell stuff. The cop then had me go back & he was pi$$ed & told he could make me park it until someone w/a a med card came back & then they could drive it.
So he told me to buy a logbook, get a med card & DOT# & if I get stopped anymore that I already been warned & hjad a ticket & they MIGHT let me off.
SO I'm legal know & haven't gotten stpped anymore.
I also have to get a yearly inspection of truck & trailer.

You got lucky, esp in IA, the DOT guys there are normally jerks. I've had my med card checked at every roadside level 1 insp I've been through. Never have received a violation for anything.

More times than not the state police are the DOT enforcers. It takes a special certification.

Good thing I've never been accused of being in my right mind!!!
Most I've ever weighed the rig is 24,500. Before aux fuel tank, tools, parts and dually.

Here's what I do with the truck and trailer...go on ATV trips. Utah, PA, KY,TN, Ontario. UT, again, coming up in May. We'll see what she weighs then.
ATV trip to Hatfield McCoy trails in West Virginia.

the worse thing to do to a DOT officer is to lie to them, the one who stopped me in IA was pretty cool but not all of them are because they hear so much B.S.

The problem is that different officers have different interpations of dot regs. My point and case, Lately I have been talking to a AZ highway patrol about regulations and he is compleatly off base from what FMSCA rules and regs are , and he has 20+ years on the force and his job is commerical truck enforcment. So I guess until they lay down a set of nation wide rules for all the Highway patrol to play by, we will roll the dice at each point of entry and everytime you see red and blue lights behind you.

How many of you guys that work your truck commercially run a log book or books? Anybody been asked to show their pre or post trip inspection when you've been stopped? Just curious, we run around 4 states doing jobs up to 800 miles away, We run a log & pre & post trip our two class 8 trucks but not the medium duty or pickup trucks.

Nice set-up. Doesn't matter what you weigh, matters what the trucks gvwr and trailer gvwr is.
As long as you have correct registration, 30-40k ??, and CDL license and medical card you have nothing to worry about.

i run a log anytime i run over 150 miles from the house. neveer have been asked about the inspection wether i was in the hotshot or big truck. if your other trucks are crossing state lines and fall under the commercial regs then you better be running a log cuz if they ask and you dont have it they can shut ya down for 10 hrs

I think some people are missing the point. Its not what you are hauling(personal or Commercial or farm), its the weight. Even if you are empty, it is the Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating.

Back in 2008 I got pulled thru the Colorado scales on the way back from the Paiute trails. I was told to bring in my paperwork to the scale house. He just wanted to know what was in the trailer. Who owned the quads? Told him that we were going home from an ATV trip w/ our personal quads. Good enough for him. Have a nice day!!!
