Cooper Discoverer STT's or Mickey Thompson Baja ATZ's ?
I am in seriouse need of new tires for my 06 mega cab. The stock Michelins have 60K on them and are done. I dont think they would do worth a hoot in the snow even if they where new. There where some flakes in the air yesterday so it is time to put new tires on the truck. I will be puting 285-70-17s on. Both have abought the same weight rating(3195#). The ATZ is gona run me abought $209 each mounted and balenced and the STT is gona be $212. I can get the STT on yet today or they will order the ATZs and have them in next week. What tire is gona last longer towing my camper(9000 pounds with abought 1800# toung wt)? I would asume the ATZ would last longer due to its more mild tread but I have never known anyone with either. I would also asume the STT would be better in the snow but again not sure. What kind of miles are people getting out of these tires? If ya have pics of either on your truck post em. Rite now I am leaning tword the ATZ unless I someone convinses me otherwise. This is what ime putting them on.

Mickey Thompson's are crap. I've had these on for maybe 3 or 4 thousand miles, and I seriously doubt they've got another 5 thousand in em. Never run the Coopers, but they cant be any worse than the MT's.

Iam runing the coopers SST and i like them so far. Ive got 42,000km on them and 15-17,000 of it is towing about the same weight as you and mine are standing up pretty good. As far as snow goes they will do the job but they can get pretty snakey on the cold roads pavement, give your self a little extra room for stopping is all.

Oh ya i forgot to mention, A couple of guys i know who are runing them as well only got about 30-35,000kms and the tires were pooched. I think there was a bad batch put out so you might want to check into that as well.

Well I think I may skip out on both of them. I am suprised the Mickey ATZs are not wearing that well. They look like a decent AT tread that aouta hold up. Teh STTs are just to agreasive for me after seeing them in person. I almost never go off road and just dont need something that agreasive. They look GREAT but I just dont wana replace them again next year at this time. MY tire shop has a HUGE selection of tires on hand so they took me out to there wearhouse the other day and I looked at what they had on hand. I balive I will most likely wind up with a Nitto Teragrapler. I can get them for $195 mounted and ballenced. There are a few other options they showed me and one is a new Wild Country tire that looks prety decent.

The Nitto Terragraplers suck as far as I'm concerned. I've got the 285/70/17 ATs and I'll be lucky to get 20K out of them. They do have pretty good traction in the snow though.
The tire shop reccomended a 6K mile rotation. I went with that at first and ended up wearing 1/3 of the tread off in those 6K miles. I'm doing 3K mile rotations now (what a pain in the ***) and it really hasn't been any better.
I don't hot rod around either. No burnouts, fast corners, etc. I basically drive like a 34 yer old grandpa.
I REALLY wish Toyo made a M55 in 285/70/17. I had the M55s on my 2500HD and they were the best tire I ever ran. Wore like iron, had great traction in snow and light mud. I've emailed Toyo about 100 times asking for an M55 in 285/70/17. I'm hoping they get tired of me and start making them.

Glad you all posted up before I got around to puting them on. I would be TICKED if I only got 20Kout of them. I did have a set on my last truck but I bought them used and they told me there was around 10K on them when I bought them and I only got anouther 5-10K out of them. I just asumed they lied to me abought the miles on them but aperently not. Back to the drawing board I guess. Anyone tried the new Wild Country tires they just came out with?

Stick with the michelins. Awesome tire as far as noise and wear. You got what 60,000 miles out of them? What other tire do you know of that will do that? Only a few. They are pricey but you get what you pay for. I think they just came out with a little more aggressive tire. Cooper tires are by the way.

Are you talking about the XTX Sports?
If so,a friend just put them on his Tundra. They seem to have pretty good snow traction (just came back from 3 days of hunting in the snow).
He only has a couple thousand miles on them so he has no idea as to how they'll last. The fact that they're on a 1/2 ton doesn't help you much either.
They do look good though.

Well I like how the STT's look, but that's about it. Some of our GOV's have them, and they wear like crap. I had the stock Michelins (LTX M/S) to 65k miles and the rears were at 4 32'nds / fronts at 6 32'nds in size 235-85R-16E when I changed 'em out.....awesome tires, but spendy.
I put on Maxxis Bravo MA-761's and so far, 12k miles later they seem to be wearing like iron. I don't rotate the dually, and all six are still at 15 32'nds. Plus they have an extra sidewall layer over the M's....the front's don't squat/bulge as much.
Paid $106ea, mounted them myself and paid $45 for Innovative Balancing's Dually Six Pack of beads.....well worth the $$. Nice smoooth ride, and no lead weights on my aluminum wheels.

Thats exactly why the stock Michelins came off before I hit 1000 miles. They are terrible in the snow. I called Michelin and they were surprised, according to them they have excellent snow traction. They offered to give me $400 credit on a different brand at our tire shop.
I put them on my wifes Tahoe instead. Its nothing more than a highway cruiser, and the Michelins work well in that application.
