best way to hitch a fifth wheel??

Hi all. I have been useing a cody coupler on my fith wheel since I bought it but I have read how it is not a good idea to use it. Well i bought a fith wheel hitch put it in the truck and was just wondering if any of you guys have any tips on how to hitch and unhitch. I hooked it up and that wasn't much problem but unhooking I was not sure how much I should lift the fifth wheel before I pulled out. I got it unhitch just looking for tips from someone with experience

I put my jacks down until it starts to take the weight off the hitch a bit. I don't lift it up to the point where it is lifting the truck to an "above normal" height. My truck goes down a bit when it is hooked up, so i raise it up to about the normal level, open up the hitch, and slowly drive forward. You don't want the weight of the trailer to still be on the hitch, as you might pull it ahead with you. If you have box rails, be careful that when you pull ahead, and your truck comes up, that the rails don't hit up against the bottom of the fifth wheel overhang. Hope this helps??

Yes, you can see when the pin lifts and the hitch does not. Usually about a gap of 1/2 an inch between the flat part on the hitch and the flat plate on the trailer. (The two parts that you keep lubed, one on the trailer, one on the hitch).

Once the tension (weight) is off the hitch, pull the latch/lever to open the jaws. Of course for safety sake, block the wheels of the trailer first.

Lubed? I quit lubing mine once I picked up one of these http://www.etrailer.com/Merchant2/me...duct_Code=6011 or http://tinyurl.com/qm5vs and I don't have any association with this merchant. I just googled till I found a site with a photo so you would know what I was yappin about.

The disadvantage of using the disk, is you loose most of that 1/2 inch. (so to speak)

Yes, I use the same thing. Just thought that reference would be easier for descriptive purposes. BTW, make sure you keep a pin lock on or store the disc out of sight, otherwise, they like to disappear.

Also check the lock safe pin each time you leave a rest stop, or replace it with a lock. Friend of mine caught some jerk pulling the pin out of his when he was in having a bite to eat. Guess he thought it would be funny to see a fiver drop into the bed!! I have an adjustable bubble level on mine. When I find the right unhitch angle I set and mark it. Just put the bubble back in the same place to hitch/unhitch the next time..
