Is this a bad idea?

I was asked to tow a car trailer outa state & bring back an H1. Sounds like fun.

Couple day trip ... but I didn't commit yet. What came to mind was the legal protection. I don't have any insurance for that kind of thing.

It's the "what if" that concerns. A tire blows & the H1 gets wrecked, totaled. Something gets ripped off it while parked ... on & on.

Am I correct in assuming I'm wide open for a law suit?

Well it you are not getting paid I don't think you have much to worry about. If the vehicles are insured that you are towing they should cover themselves.

you personally may not want to for fear of raising "red flags" but, if it were me, i would just call my insurance company and ask them. and, ask them the legal stipulations that may be in place for whether or not its considered "commercial hauling". either way, if they would cover it in the event of an accident, would it be fair for you to have raised premiums or dropped coverage as an end result? if it were not my toys, and i wasnt getting paid for the haul, id never do it -just to haul the load. maybe you could obtain a "temporary" commercial policy to cover the trip that could be paid for by whomever you are doing the hauling for? good luck!

Most insurance will cover whatever you are towing behind your vehicle, however they may not cover the H1 because it is a vehichle itself. It may be covered if you are NOT getting paid to do it, the other problem would be if you get stopped by the DOT and they want your CDL and you haven't gotten your rig weighed, now that can be a real problem. If you have the registration for the H1 then you can say that it is yours if not it could cost you BIG time.

"JUST HAULIN IT FOR A FRIEND" - Your insurance will cover your butt for liability as long as they know you were not doing it for money. The H1 itself would not be covered at all.

Great replies guys, really appreciate it. It sounds like the trip is a no go now. Don't know if it's the insurance company NOT wanting to document a waiver or what, but it looks like the H1 owner is having the engine yanked & shipped.

The whole problem with the H1 is water in the oil. I guess they have a problem with the motors & this happens.

Darn ... was looking forward to the trip & the tow.

Don't take advise from anyone other than your insurance agent.

BUT. The given is your policy more than likely covers liability for you, your trailer, and the contents of the trailer, as is standard unless excluded. LIABILITY is the key word. Damage to the Hummer would be covered under the Hummer's OTC (Other than Collision or Comprehensive Coverage).

RENT a trailer from U-Haul and pick up the additional policy from U-Haul. This does two things. If a tire blows out and the Hummer falls off and takes out 10 cars, who is liable???? Not up to you to maintain the tires or bearings on the rental trailer, right? It also moves the Hummer to a peice of equipment that your budy rented and has accepted as being the means to transport his vehicle. Add another layer.

THAT SITUATION ACTUALLY HAPPENED TO A FRIEND OF MINE HE WAS TOWING A CORVETTE AND WRECKED IT. HE ACTUALLY HAD TO KICK IN THE GAP OF WHAT THE INSURANCE DID NOT PAY AND WHAT THE VEHICLE WAS WORTH. HE HAD TO REMORTGAGE HIS HOME.
