back up camera

whats good , whats bad, looking at one thats wireless , just mount it to the license plate and clip it to the visor, or windshield, not wanting to break the bank.

I have seen some that are $2-300, I see walmart has one for around $90. Im prob going to try one for the Girlfriends truck, so she can hook up the GN Trailer. (4door short bed). She cant see the ball. Im gonna mod it by putting magnets on it, so she can put in in the bed for GN trailers or on tailgate for BP trailers. Look at walmart or walmart online.

What you have to look at is the pixels and the visibility in the dark. The more pixels & lumination the more $$. I have been pleased with the unit I got from the guy from http://www.rvcams.com/ . He was very helpfull and I love the camera, I can see in total dark. I have the monitor in the center console.

At night the backup lights on the truck at night makes it look like daytime. With this system you can select reverse image so it's not to confusing.
With a camera your depth perception is not reel good but you become a pro in no time.

I backed up to a cardboard box a few times before trying it for real.

Here are some pictures.

I bought mine on ebay, around $200 - works awesome - clips to the rear view mirror.

i have the one from crutchfield that bolts to the license plate, and plays on your inscreen DVD.

it's the second best mod you will ever do to your truck.

search for my post "perimeter lighting"
that's the first.

you use the cargo light to turn on the back up lights,
and that makes the camera stay on, and you always light to see,
and light to hook up the trailer.

a back up camera allows you to hook up the trailer while the wife gets things ready in the house. it saves twice as much time as you think, because it saves your time and hers.

I saw them at the NFMS back in Feb. Most of them were 200-400 bucks. The 400 buck was one that had inputs for more than one camera. Then you could mount one to the bed, and one to the tailgate so you could do the g-neck, and one for bumper pull. Or mount another to the front of the truck or whatever. Total of five cameras could be added to the system. I think I have the literature at home still. I will look this weekend and see.

back-up camera

I bought the Walmart $90 version, has the 3.5" screen. Works adequate but not the best. I know I got tired of getting the kids or the wife to understand what info I needed from them to hook up the trailer, saves alot of frustration. I hooked the power for the camera to a little pushbutton switch in the dash instead of the back-up lights. Gives me a little more convienience and control. In case you just want the license plate of the guy tailgating you on the road or keep an eye on the load on the trailer.

I just installed a Pyle View PLCM36 camera I purchased from Amazon.com for $66.00. Works well, but it's wired so getting the wire run through the firewall was not easy and all the way to the back. I had to purchase a extension RCA cable to make it reach. Seems to be doing well so far, but not the most high dollar one on the market. Gives a nice picture before I hit something.

My Choice for 5th Wheel Camper Camera System.

Just recently purchased a 4 camera color system for my Truck and 5th wheel from RearViewSafety, I really like it so far when Towing the 5th wheel, a PIA to install and hide all the wires but worth it. The 4 camera system is cheap compared to others I had priced thur Campingworld and other places. Time will tell if it is good or not but for the price worth a try. Im posting the link to the site, If you decide to go with the system you will probably want to buy the quick connect harness also so you can disconnect everything from the camper at the rear of the truck. The harness is around 90.00 more but worth it and comes with plenty of extra cable. The cameras have 120 Deg. range of view, 50 ft infra red night vision, Weatherproof connectors. You can also wire the system to your turn sigs and backup lights so it auto swaps to the selected cam and then back to the rear after turn signal is cleared. Install instructions were a bit vague but needed to know wiring info is there. If your mechanically/electrically inclined at all you can install it. I did mine own and that ought to be proof anyone can do it...LOL. Here is link for the system I purchased. http://www.rearviewsafety.com/products/rvs-770710.html . I didnt really need the 4th camera but got it and put it in the back window of the truck to aid in connecting the 5th wheel hitch. Figured it would be a spare in case back cam quit working. Rear cameras have sound but if you use the quick connect harness the sound for the very back camper camera doesnt work. Was told up front though by sales person (Joseph) that was the case. I think there might be a work-around to get the sound. Sound will work if Quick Connect harness isnt needed. Sound on the cam doesnt matter to me though. I wanna see whats back there. In my opinion a wired system is better than wireless because of the distance involved to the back of the camper. I've heard many of the wireless systems have way to much interference or weak signals because of distance in between the camera and receiver. And with wireless you still have to run wires for power to the camera. (Hint: Wiring to the Front turn lights prevented the brake light signal from interferring with the auto swapping capability of the camera system.) Good luck with whatever camera system you choose to go with.

I've been kind of interested in a cheap wireless one, but I don't know what their transmit range is.

I'd like to put the camera on the top of my 40' toyhauler, and could power it off the center clearance light (I usuallly run with lights on anyway).

The tow mirrors work well, but small vehicles can still hide back there. Also it would be nice for backing/parking.

Any ideas?

I bought and 80.00 backup camera from Sam's Club, and have been quite impressed with it. It is color and has a monitor that can accept other video input. The camera is sort of wireless. The camera has a 20' wire going to the control box which supplies the power and receives the picture, which is then transmitted to the in-cab monitor. I dunno what the range is for the camera, as the dump truck it's installed on is only about 16' from the monitor.
I do know I can drive through town and pick up pictures from monitors inside of buildings as I pass by. It does get a little freaky with vibration, but I did mount it on a piece of flexible, thin metal, so I could fine-tune the aim, down towards my hitch. The affect is if the truck lurches when I dump the clutch the picture gets fuzzy and loses color for a second or two.
For 80 bucks I can't complain. I sure do have an easier time hooking up trailers now.

If you're installing on your TT, since this one has a 20' cord, you could mount the transmitter even closer to the truck, under or inside the TT, so the signal wouldn't have as far to travel.
