I've been stopped and had my tires, saftey chains and lights checked by DOT on a 20' utility trailer. Weighed the load too.

That is the first time I have heard of a law you requiring you to use ST tires on a trailer. There are a number of 5th wheels and trailers that come from the manfufacture with LT tires. I don't buy that for a second.

Are you saying that the DOT is looking for "ST" tires? What are they going to do with these tires that came on my 5th wheel - the trailer specific Goodyear Unisteel G614 RST? This is an all-steel, G-rated (3750 lbs @ 110 PSIG) radial that comes in only one size - LT235/85R-16. See HERE.

All I know is that he made a big deal of how lucky I was to have trailer tires (TOWMASTER). I don't personnaly know the "law". They were busting ever utility trailer they could find that day. I didn't know they wanted your saftey chains to cross either. I just got lucky hooking up that day. Had to prove to him that the trailer was made before the safety requirements were required for saftey brakes.

As the link I provided shows, not all trailer tires are "ST" designated. If that's what he was looking for, he's sadly mistaken.

Hey ANNABELLE, did you get stopped in NM? You have to watch the DOT and the scale house cops because they play pretty dirty. You may want to check some of the state laws just so you know! In all of my travelings I never have a fun time when it comes to a NM trooper some of them are one step above thugs!

So know the law and watch yourself!!

They must of had a blitz going on utility traliers that day, I'll bone up on the law. He didn't end up giving me any tickets. He checked my tires, load, saftey chains, lights (was during the day) and hitch.

I have had bad results with Goodyear Marathons and will not use them anymore. I will probably go to LTs next time.

Customer knew we pretty much did what we could do....DC zone tech even came out and reviewed the info. Last I heard he was going to install air bags.

....and to the point at hand. I'm looking into trying the 10 ply 15" tire route. Titan or Denmans.

I had problems with Carlisle Load Range D tires. They had the correct pressure and did not have dry rot. My Wildcat does not sit around. Below is a write up about my explosion.

I went to 16 inch LT Load Range E tires and have been extremely happy with them. I have about 35,000 miles on them. I think I did the change in 2003. Below is the write up on that change.
