Am I legal?

I am getting ready to deliver a vehicle to my dad(its his vehicle, but at my place) I live in PA, he is 700 miles away in TN. My truck has my business name on the door, but i dont do any contract hauling, etc. Is there a chance I can run into problems hauling the truck with my commercial vehicle, over state lines?

Put some masking tape over the name and have at it.

yup just cover up the name on the door with masking tape & take a felt marker & write not for hire on it. That should get-r-done.

If you have a business name on the side you are commercial! You should stop at the scales and if you blow past 1 they will come after you. Covering up your name would look suspicious to me. You'll be running in a grey area, hope you're a good talker.

wait a minute... What kind of business name are we talking about? If you have a construction business or somthing then who the heck cares. If you have a professional hauling sign on your door then it would have a dot number on it anyways... I haul all over the place with my farm name on my door full of horses and never get bothered...

Happened to me a couple years ago, I went to the base outside of Lacrosse Wisc. to pick up a couple military trailers for a doctor friend with my dads 03 CTD dually and gooseneck flatbed. On my way back to South Dakota I got stopped in MN and checked. I told them I was hauling for a friend of mine and they let me go. We had our construction sign on the door. They did ask if I was getting paid and I said no...however I did get compensated well. I say don't worry about it.

i'd say to heck with them load up, mash that gas, and haull that a**. i haul cattle with a farm tag on a big truck for other people but if i get asked it's my cattle, no more questions. it's your truck is all you gotta tell them, blow by the scales, i haven't ever been stopped for haulin cars behind a pickup and i went state to state before. so deliver the vehicle and make daddy happy.

I think some folks are just natural worry warts. I haul 2 tractors at a time from GA. to KY. with my farm tags and never really even thought about it. I have done this 20-30 times. maybe i'm just lucky but it really does not seem like you have much to worry about. I have seen a guy in a u-haul try and pull through the weigh station scales, paranoid or just wanting to play big rig, who knows?

For military DITY moves, you have to weigh the truck empty and loaded to get your $$$.

I figured you did that at a cat scale. I didn't know you could use the highways scales for personal weighing. If you can I have acouple loads i would like to weigh. Do they charge you to weigh a non-commercial vehicle?

Here in SD, ALL vehicles over 8k lbs must stop at scales, RV's excluded. I've seen them chase down 3/4 ton pickups with cargo in the box...commercial or not.
