Air horns to protect the stupid
#16
I bought a full kit from Mypushcart.com. It's a Viair 450C 100% duty cycle compressor, a 5 gallon Viair tank, Kleinn 230 triple chime train horns, and all the fittings needed. I mounted the compressor and tank in my toolbox. I had the horns mounted behind the bumper in my 06 1500 and I havent put them on the new truck yet. Probably have to mount the horns in the spare tire area im thinking. The lonest one is 17 1/2 inches. Most people get the hint when you blow them

Doesn't that muffle some of the sound?
I did something like that to one of my kids years ago. He was 14 or so and we had to go to the store for something. He went ahead and jump in my Ford Excursion while I was in the house grabbing my jacket or something. I came to the front door and saw him sitting in the front seat with the passenger door open. I hit the remote alarm button on my key. That kid flew a good ten feet out of the truck before he touched down. Just typing this is bringing back memories of the event and I'm laughing still to this day. Of course, now my son is 22 and a Sergeant in the Army. Someday he'll probably get his revenge and I'll probably have a heart attack.

Forgive me from straying from original thread.
I believe in loud horns for warning other motor vehicles.
But be careful on using them on cyclists, especially obvious amateurs/recreationists.
It can make them jump right into your path instead of out of it. As a life long cyclist I have trained myself to not look and steer away from the sound of a horn. But with most folks they tend to look/jerk head towards the sound and that in turn causes them to pull their bicycles into the path of the vehicle. Please slow down and go around them when possible to avoid a potentially fatal "event".

You want to ride safe, go find a park or at least a quiet country road. Either that or put a motor on it and do a safe speed.
This is just to let you know that you do not rule the road on a bicycle. Want to be safe go find a place to ride. And just for the record, I do not break the law.... go sue me!

I installed a three trumpet train horn on my truck. I mounted it just behind passenger side of the cab. I made a bracket and fastened it to the frame the horns face towards the ground but are still loud as heck. I have a three gallon tank in the tool box, water well PSI switch, a 12 volt air compressor, and a toggle switch in the cab to energize the solenoid valve. The only problem is I keep burning up air compressors. I really don't want to spend $300 on one. But these $40 compressors aren’t doing the job.

Have train horns on the 04 pete we haul the bulls in. they are mounted on the passenger side by the battery box. they are their to get the attention of the fools who like to get on that side when making that right turn.scared the crap out of a guy who pulled up on the right when i was swung out wide to turn righthe jumped about 4 ft inhis car was pretty funny. as far as the bikes they need to make them pay some sort of taxes to ride the road they are a pain here too. the motorcycle guys are almost as bad but at least they pay taxes for their right to ride on the road

I would love a set of air horns on my truck, there isn't a day that goes by that i dont get cut off durring my 30 min drive (round trip) to and from work. (15 each way)
As for the bikers. I have no problem with the ones that ride singlefile down the side of the road, out of the flow of traffic. But try to scare the ones that take up the whole road to scare them. I too hate when i'm on a narrow busy road and cant pass the single file bikers because there's not enough room. that is just suicide.
Personaly i love to ride my mtn. bike durring the summer, it's A LOT cheaper than any vehicle to "run". I hate the jerks that try to scare me because i'm ridding my bike on a public road. Maybe they should dedicate half the road to bikers. put a stop light every so often and make it a 2-way one lane road with a baricade seperating traffic, so that us bikers can ride in safety. I would hate if they did that.
So maybe just had the ones that take up the whole road, and leave us that follow the rules alone.

Cyclists = Road Lice.
Seriously, single file is no problem, but side by side is illegal here, and still they do it. Choice between the front of a Kenworth, and a nice, soft cyclist. It's natural selection at that point.
Stupid drivers are everywhere, and we are ALL guilty of being one at some point. That said, most of us who are out there on a professional level at least make a point of following the rules and paying attention.
I drive the speed limit, stop at stop signs and signals as required, use turn signals, and have been known to hand the right of way to someone who doesn't deserve it. I don't experience road rage, but I understand where it comes from.
Horns and sirens don't seem to have the same effect that they did years ago, I suppose it comes from the "me first" mentality to some extent. Being the center of my own universe, I still watch for emergency vehicles, having been the driver of many of them over the years.
Slow down, be careful, and watch for the other guy, when horns/lights and sirens don't work, common sense still does.
Good Luck with the horns.

That's sure the truth. I did over 400 miles today pulling an A train (40' + 20' pup) loaded with crushed cars and I had at least 4 people pull down right bonehead moves cutting in front of me. Two of them cut right across from the far left lane to take an exit on my right. Then there was the gal who cut so close in front of me I couldn't see part of her car. I laid on the horn and all she did was wave nicely, move up a few rigs and do the same thing to a car. The car didn't weigh over 90,000 lbs like I did though. That was a light load. We're legal for 105,500. Ya s'pose she might have thought about that???
I don't think that's true. I spent nearly 27 years as a paid Firefighter and the ones on the rigs I was assigned looked and sounded exactly like a semi horn. Not all of them sounded the same though. Years ago we had a reserve rig at the house I was at and I liked it better than what was on the first line rig. I swapped them and it made no difference in the sound of either one. I was totally mystified over it. Never did figure that out.
Do you have source for fire horns like you are talking about? Just because I don't know anything about 'em doesn't mean it isn't so. Portland liked to be cheap sometimes.

Maybe it was just your department but most Fire Trucks have what are called Stuttertone Horns and have a very unique demanding sound of their own.
If you are old enough to remember the old television program Emergency, they sounded the horns at the beginning of the show.
This is what they sound like.

Yes enjoy biking, but do it somewhere else then on a CAR/TRUCK roadway. Over the years I grew a hate for them. Slow down? Are you kidding? Drop a gear, speed up and see how close you can come. Old route 78 in Mississippi was a two lane with no shoulders, narrow lanes and solid traffic and there was always a line of bikers doing their thing. Should be illegal but it is not. Did you know that the wind off a cab-over will keep you from hitting one? Yep whole line of them down the embankment. Just like domonoes.

I have been in trucking since 83 and I agree, If you wanna ride a bike find a sidewalk. Bicycle's should NOT be allowed on the road, if you wanna ride a bike on the road pay a wheel tax just like any other vehicle. And be subjected to fines as in impeding traffic. Bicycle's on the road are a HAZARD

I don't have a problem with the cyclist who go single file, but when they ride 2 & 3 abreast & hold up traffic. That's a problem for me. I ride a motorcycle most of the time, but do not sit around holding up traffic; moreover, I pay my share of road taxes to be on the road. I agree, if you want to ride a bicycle find a better place.

The problem with most air horns on our local fire trucks is restricted air floe. I changed mine to larger tubing and a valve on each horn. An amazing difference. Had to increase tankage or the went low.
