Air Bags or Timbrens

Which do you think will be better a set of air bags or Timbrens to help bring up the back end some?

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

I have air bags on my '97 2wd. works perfect.

I tried ordering the Timbren's, but after the company I was trying to order from sent me the wrong set three times in a row, I just ordered the Air Lift Super Duty's, with the Load Controller II ($300 total), and I installed everything myself. Took me roughly 6 hours.

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

I put Timbrens on my truck and it rides nice and level, even with my heavy fiver. I got mine at www.stuff4trucks.com which is a division of J.C. Madigan. You want part number DR3500CA. They don't list the Dodges on the site so just email them for a price. Nice thing is there is no difference in the ride unloaded and it has a nice firm feel to it when towing. They will last the life of the truck. And they have great customer service. I think mine were around $160.00 for the set and they were a breeze to install. About 20 minutes to do both.

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

So how do these Tmbrens actually work to stabilize and keep the rear of the truck level ??? ???

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

I really like the Timbrens. I hadthe truck loaded with about 3,000 pounds of people and junk in/on it, and then towed about 6,000 pounds of trailer. Truck was nice and level. If you put on the really heavy loads the air bags would be nice because they are adjustable.

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

Timbrens got my vote...recently pulled a 12 ft U-haul (both truck and u-haul heavily loaded) on a 2000 mile trip and had no problems. Very stable on the highway, even in 50 mph cross winds (Wyoming/Montana). Only downside is you lose the ability to deflate when empty. Love this truck!

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

I just researched this.
I ordered the Timbrens.
I read a lot of post's suggesting the current method of attaching airbags to the '03's causes loss of some of the suspension travel in the rear.

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

Well, I got the airbags. I just haven't put them on yet. If I don't like them them I'll check into the Timbrens later. I think the airbags will give me the lift I want when pulling my 5VR.
I am curious though, how much drop do you guys get with the Timbrens as compared to when you didn't have them ??? ???

I would like to hear that reply also SuperGew, How much, ???.
The question on suspension travel loss also concerns me. I am looking into both types of units. Getting a goose neck with 12,000 lb cap for my business & need to be equipped right, but when the job is done ride right also.

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

I just put the Timbrens on my truck.
The load I wanted them for is 3,500 lbs. Before the Timbrens I had 4" drop at the rear bumper. Now with the Timbrens the drop is 2.5".
I have not got to drive with the camper on it yet. I did drive it empty and it seemed to have a little rougher ride. They came with an extra 1" spacer that I did not install, hoping that it would have a smoother ride when empty without the spacer. Anybody try installing the 1" spacer?
I don't know what the best amount of drop is but I was thinking I wanted it to drop about 2" instead of 4" so I am close to that.
They were simple to put on.

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

I saw a picture of them where when unloaded they didn't even touch the axle tube, am I right in this? If so I wouldn't think they would efect the empty ride, also means that they have to drop further before they start to work I guess.

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

There should be at least 1/2 inch of space between the rubber spring and the axle tube. The Timbren should not effect the ride empty except maybe on a large bump. If there is not enough space when the truck is unloaded contact Timbren as they have different sizes available. That is what I had to do. The truck settles about 2 inches with the trailer on it. Was almost twice that before.

Re:Air Bags or Timbrens

I had to jack up the rear of the truck some to slide the Timbrens in place. They contact the rear end even with no load. They make it ride different empty. I will call Timbren Monday and mention all of this and see what they say.

I paid $214.20 @ Baxter Auto Parts

The weird thing is they origally wanted $289 until I told them I could get them for $250 at the place I bought my 5VR, then he looks in the computer and magically the price drops so I had to get them ;D.
I'm not sure when I put them on because I'm not going to use the 5VR until about March or April ???
