700,000 miles - Used for pulling
In this months Trailer Life magazine (Feb 2007). Page 64 - 'Special Delivery'. article on a hotshotter female that uses her 1998 Dodge/Cummins 2500 for delivering RVs. 700,000 miles and counting . Couldn't tell if it was a 1998 (12V) or a 1998.5 (24V) by the photos.

Yes I have seen a few with well over 1 million miles... as for the pay all i can say is I would rather have a 12 Valve anyday to pull,, no electronics to screw up on them, and they pull just as good if not better than the new ones. No use replacing the truck every few years, as the cummins will last a long time pulling everyday,, its alot easier on the truck to be pulling on the hi-ways than it is to be in stop and go traffic everyday

do some searchin in the 1st gen. forums, you outta be able to make close to that hp w/out spending a dime, but if it were mine, I'd find a used 12cm exhaust housing from a 94'-02' HX35 & slap on it, & then get a decent set of injectors & then just do some tweaking on the pump screws,(AFC, full load, fuel pin, there may be more?) & then watch your 3rd. gen disappear behind the old 92'!!! LOL & yes for the record they'll run for just as long with a little tuning as what they will stock, I had a 90' non intercooled truck that was cranked up & had well over 300k miles on it & it ran perfect & pulled great too!! "pull as good or better" not so sure about that. my 3rd will pull cicles around our old 1st gen. It should pull a lot better, just look at the numbers, almost twice the torque and hp. If a 3rd does not pull WAY better than a 1st, the 3rd has some real problems. I like my 63 chev truck with a 3 on the tree and a 235 six but I don't pretend it will out pull the 98 with the 350 vortec.

Well I'm confused now I've read in those forums that it is real hard to get anywhere near those #s. I'll have to look a bit more. With a 3rd gen I know for 5 bills you can put out 500hp and 850 ft. lbs. of tq. with out ever turning a wrench. I love the old 12v's but I'm having a hard time beliving I can make comparable #'s with $500.00. Are your sure your not being a tad overly optimistic?

No real mods but you can out run/out pull ANY stock 3rd gen? Well I guess me and a 1,000,000 others have been suckered. Think if I show this post to DC they will give me my money back?

how are you gonna get 500hp out of that 3rd gen. for $500 anywhere but on a piece of paper????? I highly doubt your truck is 335rwhp the way it sits???? you have to understand that DC's #'s are flywheel hp (if that) & when you put that thing on a dyno to test the rwhp you're not gonna get the #'s that DC has these engines rated for???? & I don't know any way in the world to get 500hp out of a 3rd gen. for 500 bucks???? I understand you can go out & buy a downloader that gives 200+ hp & if you add that to your already 335hp then you get over 500hp, but this is all on paper, in the real world things are very different!!!! check out the list of mods on some of the trucks on this forum that are trying to break 500hp, it's like reading a phonebook!!! not to mention your stock auto isn't good for much more than 300hp (give or take??) if you have a good one it does no good to have a 1000hp engine if your tranny won't hold 350hp?? heck I may be all wrong about this whole deal, but from my experiences & that of lots of friends on here I just don't think your claims are quite up to par???? I could be wrong?? & please correct me if I am by all means, but your 3rd gen will require alot more $ to break 500hp than any old worn out 12-v will, I can guarantee you that. Dusty

This is a good discussion, for a 12 valve, A custom ground plate, $0 exhaust $300 same for a 24 valve, BHAF $50 same for 24 valve, gauges $250 same for 24 valve. Timeing advanced $100 if you ask around. A auto build up is also the same. Add sticks or a turbo also the same $. I dont know I like the old mechanical engines I shopped around for a year till I found one and love it.

Well I know it's not 500 hp, but kinda close.............. I just dyno'd 466hp/922 tq on a dynojet with a stock 3rd gen with only a Smarty. Smarty costs, what....$685. http://www.riegerweb.com/Nortex_DTR/...I/TexasCTD.WMV
Im not arguing, cause I think 12 valves ROCK!
But 466hp for $685 is not to bad, imo. But I did come up 34hp short and spent $185 more than Mule3010 said.

I was never quoting rwhp. only the advertised #'s. I still have trouble beliving that a 12v with no or very minor mods pulls harder and is faster with a load than a 3rd gen. Maybe it's as you say and it's only "paper numbers" but I know our 3rd out pulls our 12v hands down. ( I only have my personal real world, seat of the pants feeling to back this up). You say your 1st or is it 2cnd? with little or no mods will out pull out run and pass any stock 3rd gen out there. Maybe that's true but it's not our experiance. By the way I love the old 1st gen. It just does not have the kahonas that the 600 series does. I guess yours does. congrats.
