Can someone tell me which wires do what on the 4-pin connector? I assume you have reverse, brake, and left and right signals, but which wire does each function?

The one that is different from the rest is the neutral (ground or negative). The one next to that is the running lights. Next is left turn and on the end right turn. I am assuming you refer to the (4) pin straight.

Yes, that's the correct plug. So, there are no reverse or brake lights?

Not on the 4 way,thats why we have the 7 way............for real trailers

For reverse you need the 6 pin connector. I am not familiar with electrical brakes. I have only towed boats and normally they have hydraulic brakes. When braking the weight of the boat & trailer compress the piston that runs the hydraulic system. Submersing electrical braking components is normally a bad idea. I have the converter (6) pin to (4) pin straight, got it from the dealer. Never used the (4) pin straight under the bumper. They tend to get corroded at the running light stud, probably winter and rain when driving emtpy at night.

Okay, thanks for the help guys. I was going to tap into the 4-way for a light project but it looks like I'll have to tap into the 7-way or tail lights. Thanks!

The left and right turn together are the brake lights. No reverse.

Dodge does a kit to convert the Flat 4 way to the Rnd. 7 way, It ties into the flat four for R&L TS and Tail, then it has a pig tail that ties into the reverse light for back up, one pig tail to the battery and one pigtail for the trailer brakes off of the controller.. I think the kit sells for about $125. Try using some grease or di-electric compound on the flat 4 connections to cut down on corrosion.

I just installed one for a customer, it is pretty straight forward just read the instructions. I always solder and use heat shrink tubing / tape on the connections, I prefer to do it right the first time...prevents those little road side repairs while the officer of the law is watching...LOL

If your doing an in bed for a 5vr or goose the Valley harness no is in the sig.

A lot of people get the brake/turn thing confused. The simple way to understand is that there is only a two filament bulb - one is for the running lights, and the other (brighter) is shared between the brake and the turn signal.

If you are looking to add some sort of light for a trailer that illuminates when you are in reverse, located and isolate one of the wires leading to your tow vehicle back-up lamp and just tap into it - it's handy as the back up light is already at the rear of the vehicle. An illuminated 12 volt test light (available at any auto parts store) should do if you can't visually locate the wire at the back/base of the lamp assembly.

If you are wiring the tow vehicle yourself, you can use the coupler as the ground between your trailer and vehicle. If the trailer is light enough, you can leave the ball and coupler "dry" of grease. This leaves the white wire available for reverse lights or to keep a charge on a winch battery etc.
As for the rest of the wires:
Yellow = Left (turn and brake)
Green = Right (turn and brake)
Brown = All around (running, parking)

I know I'm going to get ran through the mill on the white wire thing and the dry ball but hey, I've been doing it for years with small utility trailers...
