The 15 inch Goodyear Marathon's come in "D" rated. I'm looking for 15 inch "D" rated "LT" tires, but thanks anyways.

You put "impressive" load range C tires on a trailer heavy enough for 6 bolt axles? Are you sure? My trailer came with D's and I want to put E's on it.

BTW, reviews for Marathons on the RV sites are not so good but Korean made Maxxis trailer tires get great reviews and are probably the most recommended tire at RvNet. They make 15" E rated tires too.

I can appreciate wanting to put LT's on a trailer though, the biggest complaint about ST's is they're not meant for speeds of more than 65 mph, that and the fact that just about every RV manufacturer puts the cheapest Chinese tires they can find on their trailers, none of which stand up very well. Our Komfort came with Chinese Mission D rated tires, reviews for them are not good either and I want to replace them with heavier E rated tires.

I have 2 trailers righ now with 15 inch wheels. The lighter one grosses at 6400 on the wheels and I have michlen LT load range C tires on it, good for about 8000 lbs. Have 50,000 or so miles on it, including a trip to Alaska and back, and they are perfect. Never loose air, etc.

The other trailer is enough heavier(around 8000) and has the heavier 65 lp rated wheels, so I could not go with the C tires. I could not find any D rated LT tires, I had to do it in a hurry to move the trailer, so I went with the D rated Goodyear Marathan ST tires. I do not plan to tow this trailer after I get it relocated. 500 miles and 2 weeks later I had a flat. Many of my friends have the marathon tires. Almost all of them have had multiple blowouts.

My suggestion is to seriously consider going to the 16 inch rims. Opens up a whole new world of tire choices. then get the appropiate LT tires and forget worring about trailer tire failure. and do it before on of the LT tires blows through the wheel well and into the trailer.

The trailer manufacturer recommends Load Range C for this trailer. At 2,040-lbs rating per tire, the tandem axle trailer (GVWR 8k) has a perfect match of LR and ride with the YOKOHAMA RY215. (I have see these advertised as both C and D as well as the defunct "8-ply").

Increasing LR past what is necessary only insures a rougher ride for the trailer. Not smart, IMO. Neither is placing higher rated tires on rims not meant for them (or recommended mounting width).

Stay away from cheap tires, and match LR plus pressure to load.

Too much LR, too much air pressure is NOT the way to go. It's a fundamental misunderstanding of how it works to best advantage.

The 700 r15's in your link says they're 8 ply rated.
I still would be reluctant to put C's on a 6 bolt axle.

Maxxis trailer tires seem to have a good reptutation, anyone know anything about their commercial tires?:

WOW, Maxxis ST225/75R15 rated E (2830@80psi), but still only rated of a max speed of 65mph. Yes, better than the Goodyear's, but a lot more money where I'll have to by 5 of them (need a spare) and they are a little more price-e than the Goodyear's. Anyone got a good link where to order them on line?

I'm curios to see which way you go Al.
Our trailer has Mission tires on it which apparently are bad news. Our trailer's GVW is 10,000 pounds and the D rated tires are only rated at 2540 pounds each, so with the 1000 pound tongue weight everything should be okay but I'd rather have tires a little heavier just so I feel better.
The wheels we have are only rated at 2540 pounds, so either way I'll need to get new ones, I'm kinda leaning toward 16's though.
Decision is to go with LT's or ST's? I know I go faster than 65 mph towing, did that with our old trailer (running Marathons and Maxxis) and never had a problem in the 16 years we owned it.

Good luck
Will

maxxis commercial question

I am running ue-168's on a 31' airstream. Before buying I talked to a maxxis rep. and he stated they were recomended for trailer use. Running 235 75 r 15
lrD. Stiff side walls, full nylon cap, rib tread and a q speed rating. Only have about 2500 mi. on them so far, still look new and no problems. I chose these
LT/commercial tires instead of ST tires mostly because of all the bad reviews
of ST tires I have read on this and other forums. Hope this helps.

Not trying to bring back this thread from the dead, but I wanted to add that Continental has the Vanco 2 in LR D at 15". Good weight AND speed ratings. Designed for heavy vans with 15" wheels/tires.

I have a set on my 6x12 flatbed.

I think your options are going to be limited with 15'' tires. The 16'' rims I purchased were fairly inexpensive. Got it all at my local Discount Tire. Hope that helps.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

I've been looking for decent tires for my toyhauler and there just isn't a good selection in the 15 inch size, and I've got a Discount Tire right across the street from CostCo ...... looks like I'm doing some shopping.
