% grades in english
Yip that is what I want to know. I didnt find anything on this. but what exactly does that mean? like how many feet up or down does the road go for each foot or so forward. Or is it a direct indication of a ^ like a 6% downhill is like a 6^ line on a protractor?

Percentage grade tells you how many feet the road drops (on average) per 100 feet of distance. You don't have your location in your sig, out west 6 and 8 percent grades are very common. You can occasionally see much more than that, especially on state highways.

I am moving from AZ to OR so a 8% grade took me by surprise. I had a fight with a 6% towing my trailer on the way up to OR. The brakes lost. Ok so a 8% is an 8' change in elevation per 100'? Thx for translating.

The rule of thumb for grades is Whatever gear it takes to pull the grade is the gear required to descend the grade. That way yo know your speed will be correct and woun't burn out your brakes in the process Of course an exhaust brake would help alot

I am going to ask the dumb/obvious question. Does the trailer have breaks? I would hope so or you will be repeating that scene over and over again with a trailer that big. I would like a trailer around 20 feet or so but that 33 footer has got to be a pain to turn and back. I couldent emagine pulling it threw heavy trafic and wanting to change lanes.

I oftem pull 15 - 20K with my 04 Dually..... On a 6% grade the truck with a PacBrake will hold about 12K without the use of the brakes.... on loads larger than 12K I have to use the brakes to keep the load under control... I wouldn't even try to take an 8% grade with that load... I pull the pacifc northwest and to be honest on any of the interstates have never seen anything larger than a 6% grade....
